Skater Fashion Is In Vogue.

You know what they say...  "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

Interesting to see this editorial spread on Net -A- Porter, one of my favorite "high end" websites this morning.  And very timely, as I just got back from the Smithsonian's Innoskate event days ago, where I was speaking about Skateboarding x Fashion and I was able to share some of my thoughts on this very subject.

I personally think it means that we as skaters, are innovators and trend setters - always have been, always will be.  And that's pretty damn cool.

What do you think?

Hello, Skater Girl.

And you thought all the rad skater girls where hiding? Nah, you just have to know where to look.  HELLO, SKATER GIRL, a book featuring some of the most amazing female skaters (Lizzie Armanto, Allysha Bergado, Amee Jay Papelera, Nora Vasconcellos. Justyce Tabor, Mimi Knoop, Carleigh Samson, Abby Zsarnay and Amelia Brodka) is going into a second printing, so jump over to the site and order one because you know this edition will sell out too.
Lighting up DC.

Just a little 2 AM skate session with my girl Laura Thornhill while we were in DC this weekend for Innoskate. Our version of the National Monument tour - via skateboards. First up the Lincoln Memorial. Who needs to drink when you can do stuff like this in the middle of the night?  Not me.

So honored to be asked to donate these items from my 70's pro skateboard days to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History's sports collection. WOW.  Never in a million years when I started skateboarding did I ever think I would be asked to be part of something so huge. Humbled to say the least.

I'm off to Washington, DC this morning to be part of the donation ceremony and to also speak about skateboarding x fashion at the Smithsonian's Innoskate event on Saturday, June 22. If you happen to be in the DC area please come by - it's going to be an amazing day with lots of skateboarding happening!

Sometimes all it takes to make a perfect Sunday morning is skating through the deserted streets of downtown Los Angeles & shooting iphone shots of one of your best friends. Laura Thornhill making LA her own. Much love + respect for this girl.

We are both headed to the Smithsonian Museum and Innoskate tomorrow and all I can say is watch out DC, because here we come!

Cindy Whitehead x Dusters California Skateboard Collab

I'm so stoked that I can finally tell you all about what I have been working on for the past 9 months! My new bitchin' skateboard collaboration "Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word" with Dusters California is finally being released on Saturday at the Vans Warped Tour and in skateboard shops across the USA - Insane right?!

Let me give you the rad details on this baby. It has a total "Badass x Girl" vibe to it which I love - it's so totally me. The whole fashion x skate thing I always talk about on my blog really came together in this board - shiny gold trucks, and a hot pink heart mixed with skulls and edgy lettering really sets it apart and gives it that vibe I wanted but could never find. It's also easy to ride as it's technically a "cruiser" board, but to be honest with you, it's almost the same shape I rode for many years in pools and 1/2 pipes back in the day - totally old school - which I love. The skull on the grip tape and the words "Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word" and a small skull in each of the wheels are details I am really proud of. The tail of the board has my own personal motto and my signature in gold as well as the logos of two non- profits I firmly believe in.

I did all the artwork myself and Dusters creative director, Nano Nobrega was the dude responsible for making it all look so damn bitchin'. He really allowed me to go with my full "wish list" on every detail in this board that I asked for, and he had amazing suggestions and ideas to make it all come together the way it did - plus his design skills are insane. We spent many, many hours together working out every last detail over sushi and gourmet pizza. Yep, it was rough, but that's the way we get shit done.

Another detail I am super proud of is that this board supports Longboarding for Peace, an organization that I am extremely excited to be involved with & that is doing so many great things to help bring peace via longboarding all over the world. Last but not least, a portion of the sales from this board will go to the non-profit GRO (Girls Riders Organization) which helps girls get started in action sports. How rad is that? I firmly believe in giving back to the sport that has done so very much for me for all these years and feel really happy to be able to do so.

Now get out there and Skate!
Skateistan. The Book.

"Girls can't ride bikes, but they can skateboard". This statement on the Skateistan website stopped me in my tracks. Living in the United States these are both pastimes that we females take for granted. Not so in Kabul. These young girls (and boys) luckily have Skateistan. Never heard of it? Skateistan is a school with a skatepark. It's a a non-profit organization that uses skateboarding as a tool for empowerment. It's a refuge for kids in a war torn country. It uses something as simple as skateboarding to empower kids and let them enjoy life. It's pretty simple and pretty powerful.

My rad friend Brian Ridgeway gave me a copy of the beautiful new book Skateistan last month when we ran into each other. I am in awe of the stories and photos about these kids and this mission. If you'd like to know more, please visit Skateistan.org and you can also buy a copy of the new book HERE.

Skate on.  No matter where in the world you are.

We like girls who skate. We don't care if it's longboarding, cruising, downhill, street, freestyle or vert. Just get out there and SKATE.
Pretty Sweet

Puma has been making pretty sweet shoes for many years. I stated skating in Puma's back in the late 1970's. Mine were always white or cream with a tan detail. I think I'm going to have to break out of my mold and get into some more fun color ways now after seeing the selection above. SWEET..
