Hurry Up & Wait.

How would you feel if you trained & competed all season, placed in the top 3 consistently & qualified for the winter Olympics but were too young to be eligible?  Well, if you are snowboarder Chloe Kim you take it in stride. At 13 Chloe has been placing consistently (she placed 2nd in three events in a row!) and even qualified to represent the USA in Sochi, but since the Olympic rules are that you must be at least 15, Chloe is not eligible to compete.

Chloe mentioned in a few interviews that the the requirement are there for a reason and she is 100% OK with waiting. I'd say she already has the right attitude to go far in this sport!

Who's Rad? Zoe Safanda.
 Photos: David Safanda

I swear there must be something in the water in Northern California. Every time I turn around there is another young ripper coming out of there. Nice to see that up and down the California coast the girls are making a name for themselves - just like back in my day.  Check out 9 year old Zoe , she may be small but as you can tell by these photos,  size doesn't determine height in your airs or how aggressively you attack coping for that matter.  Her style reminds me of one of the rad female skaters she looks up to - Julz Lynn.  I for one can't wait to see Zoe compete in person.

 Who's Rad?      Zoe Safanda

Age:    9

Home is:      San Rafael, CA

How Long Have You Been Skating:     4 years

Girls who skate that inspire YOU:   Alana Smith, Nora Vasconcellos, Mimi Knoop, Julz Lynn, Leticia Bufoni...the list is pretty long!

Favorite place you've ever skated:    Woodward West for Girls Week!

Favorite Trick:    Hmm...don’t think I have one favorite trick so much as I just like fast park and bowl skating. I'm working on a kickflip but it’s frustrating me right now.

Sponsors:     My mom and dad for now  (editors note:  I see that changing very fast for Zoe!)

Three Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I like to draw comics - sometimes gory ones

2. I like watching Food TV

3. I'm afraid of bees

What's Next?

There’s another NorCal C.A.S.L season coming up. I finished 2nd overall in my age group last year but I’m moving up so I’ve got my work cut out for me. I’m also hoping to compete in a couple of the World Cup events this year.

Vans Girls Combi Classic Video.

 Video by Colin Clark

So stoked & honored to have filmmaker Colin Clark share this awesome video he did at the Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic with us! Colin has filmed just about every major skateboarder & skateboard event around - so to have him come and spend all day doing this video to share with GN4LW site & readers was really above & beyond.

Sit back & enjoy watching the girls shred, and see some awesome behind the scenes moments!

Make sure you check out Colin's other skate videos  HERE.

Thanks Colin & Amanda!  xx

Girls On Fire.

Skaters in order of photos above:
Alana Smith, Beverly Flood, Julz Lynn, Allysha Bergado, Arianna Carmona, Poppy Starr Olsen,

The Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic. What a great contest. All the girls were absolutely shredding. From Japan, Australia, and all over the USA they came to compete, have fun, and skate with other girls just like themselves. Every single age division had an amazing group of girls with bags of trick in a pool so huge that even the tallest girts seemed small in comparison. They hit the hip, tore up the shallow end, used both the round and square pools, and were frigging relentless. They were on fire.

So stoked and proud to be there again this year to see them all having a blast and kicking some ass.

Thanks so much to photographer Dan Sparagna for sending these pics over last night - they really capture what went down and how hard these girls ripped!

More posts from the contest  coming soon - behind the scenes, video footage & more!

Following us on Facebook HERE to see latest updates.

Thanks to Vans for being such a huge supporter of girls in skateboarding!
Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic.
One of THE best weekends in skateboarding is almost here! Yep, tomorrow is the Vans Girls Combi Contest.  I can't wait to see all the girls shredding! Girls come from all over the USA and abroad for this event and it's so nice to see them all together in one place doing what they love. And let's be honest, seeing them pull some huge tricks out of the combi is rad too!

We will be instagramming and tweeting live - so follow us on instagram at @sportsstylist for pics of the girls competing, practicing and some candids!

Burton x Sochi.

 Images via Burton

In case you missed it, here's a look at the uniforms that the USA snowboarding team will be wearing in Sochi come February 6.  Designed by Burton, they really seem to have that down to earth, retro vibe - rather than that total red/white/blue in your face feel that so many of the athletes uniforms at the Olympics seem to have. I feel like this is more keeping with the feel of the sport .

Curious what the athletes think...
Who's Rad? Bryce Ava Wettstein.

Photos by Wettstein Media

When you meet Bryce for the first time you may not realize that this is the same girl you just saw dropping into a massive pool and throwing down an ever so casual 50/50 grind on coping right in front of you. She's not one to brag, she just goes out there and does her thing. Out of the pool she is like most girls her age, a little shy when she first meets you, laughing & joking with her friends, giving hugs, and always smiling. But once she drops in, watch out. Her determination is evident in every trick she tries (and makes!) and her focus is 100%. But one of the things I think is the coolest about Bryce is that she surfs as well as she skates. Yep, she also has a full list of sponsors for surfing as well. The girl is a double threat and one to keep an eye on. I'm excited to see what she throws down at the Vans Combi contest!

Who's Rad: Bryce Ava Wettstein

Age: 10

Home is: Encinitas, CA

How Long Have You Been Skating? 6 Years

Girls Who Skate that inspire YOU: Julz Lynn, Sarah Thompson, Lizzie Armanto, Poppy Olsen

Favorite place you've ever skated: Etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest Flow

Favorite Trick: Boneless-One, 50-50 Grinds on Pool coping

Sponsors: Silly Girl Skateboards, McGill's Skateshop, Pride Socks, Aura Skateboarding & Training Facility, Hamboards, Encinitas Surfboards

Three Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I'm addicted to Parmesan cheese.
2. I can't stand skating in pants.
3. I love to sing but never in public!

What's Next?

Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic 2014 - which is super exciting because all the girls come into town and it is the one time of year we are all together for almost a week! I am competing in the Under age 15 Amateur Division. Last year I came in 4th place, so I hope to at least make the Final again this year, but the competition is tough! All the girls, especially the young Ams are progressing so much! Which is great for our sport! I have a Western Surfing Association Tour contest in Huntington Beach at the pier on President's Day weekend. I have a surfing photoshoot coming up during the next clean swell with Sticky Bumps Surf Wax and photog Jason Kenworthy. I just had a fun video drop on Network A channel - they came and filmed in my backyard Iguana Bowl:) Dan Bourqui wants to shoot us Silly Girls during the Combi contest. It is January 18th by the way!

One of the best stories of 2013 had to be Diana Nyad, swimming from Cuba to Florida non stop and making it. No shark cage. The woman is amazing. There is a LOT more to this story and if you missed this documentary on TV you can get it today on itunes.

It is inspiring to learn what you can do when you put your mind to it.

 Anastasia Ashley in Cooler Magazine

Are there any other big issues in women’s surfing you’d like to chat about?
I would say it would be great if the major surf brands instead of models used all their surfers in campaigns, there are so many beautiful girls now, it seems silly if they are using models instead.

Anastasia Ashley shares her thoughts on athletes vs models in surf related ads, Maya, big wave surfing and what Laird had to say, "twerking" as a warm up and more in Cooler Magazine's online interview. I love that she doesn't shy away from the hard stuff.

We put out a call (OK, it was more like a Facebook & Instagram post, if you want to get technical) for female skaters that should be featured in the 2014  "Who's Rad?" section of the site. Beverly Flood stoked us right away, with photo after photo of her shredding pools right and left. And after reading her contest schedule for 2014 we can't wait to see more from her, starting with the Van's Girls Combi Classic on January 18.  Yeah Beverly!  xx

Cynthia Rowley x Lindsey Vonn.

What do you get when you combine fashion x sports? The Cynthia Rowley x Lindsey Vonn helmet collaboration. They presented four rad helmet designs - but since Linsdey can only wear one during the Olympic Games, they had a Facebook & Instagram contest for fans to pick the winning design. I'm stoked to see that the Snow Leopard helmet won - it's badass!

Can't wait to see Lindsey racing in Sochi in that!

Breaking Barriers with Pamela Zoolalian.

A great way to start 2014 - watch, listen, and learn from the first woman to ever compete in street luge at the X-Games, Pamela Zoolalian! I love Pamela's quote "it had nothing to do with gender" when she qualified during her race. It's also great when the guys say "I'm not going to race her - she's pretty fast!" Ha! #badass

The WASP Girls.

Photos via CNN

Women have been doing amazing things for many, many, years that have been labeled as "traditional male pursuits" and sometimes we don't hear much about them. Today during the Rose Parade the world got to know about a group of gutsy female pilots in their 90's that gave so much for our country 70 years ago - in fact 8 of them attended today's parade and rode on the float that honors them, titled "Our Eyes Are on the Stars".

A very special group of 1,102 women made up the Women Airforce Service Pilots Program (WASP) & flew planes during World War II  (some were just 18 years old and couldn't even drive yet!)  their job? To test repaired military aircraft (how scary is that!?) train male pilots, and to ferry non-flying male service men around the country.  38 of these women died while serving.

Eventually the women who had been so valued were dismissed when the male pilots came home from war and recognition for their service never came. They have mostly been forgotten from the history books and their stories never told.  When they came home and wanted to continue their careers & use their training, some were instead offered jobs by the airlines as stewardess's rather than pilots. (I'm still shaking my head at this one...)

Most people are not aware that the WASP program existed and what these women did back in those days that was pretty ballsy and amazing.

I'm glad that their story is being told. I know a lot of us think what these women did was pretty rad in many ways.  RESPECT.
