Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word at TEDx.

Cindy Whitehead speaking at TEDxYouth Santa Monica

I had the amazing opportunity & honor, to speak at TEDx a few months back. The video is now up on the TEDx YouTube channel and I am stoked to get to share it with you.

It's called "Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word" and it's all about being a strong, independent girl, standing up for yourself, going after what you want, and what I learned from the boys I grew up skateboarding with.

I hope you'll give it a listen and let me know what you think!  xx

The Devil's Toy Redux.

Back in 1966 in Montreal a young director named Claude Jutra made one of the very first skateboard films, THE DEVILS TOY.

On April 30 comes THE DEVILS FILM REDUX - the original film will be right alongside 11 new short films by directors from around the world all inspired by the Jutra classic. The site will allow users to navigate from one film to the next & witness the evolution of skate culture across the globe. It will also let you explore the cities, the skaters, the boards they ride and their favorite spots.

This is not about skateparks or competitions - it's about skating anywhere you can, taking it to the streets, the rebels and renegades, craving a session anywhere they can find it, all over the world.

Check out a sneak peak of the trailer here ----> THE DEVILS TOY REDUX

Who's Rad? Danielle De Jesus.

We are expanding our "Who's Rad" section - there are so many girls in action sports & beyond doing cool things that we think you should hear about, so today we are featuring skateboarder Danielle de Jesus who is also an amazing artist.

For most of us an Etch-A-Sketch was a toy, something we had fun playing with and doodling on during long car rides with our parents or in our room at night. For artist and skateboarder, Danielle De Jesus,  it is so much more. It's a canvas for her incredible art work. But it's not permanent, so you can't become too attached to what you draw, because in a split second it could all be gone.

I met Danielle when she posted an insanely cool pic on instgaram and facebook of an etch-a-sketch art piece she did of me skating back in the day - one look at her instgaram feed and I was hooked and I knew I needed to find out what motivates her to do this type of art!

I hope you enjoy her interview.

Who's Rad?    Danielle De Jesus

Where do you live/work?   I live in Brooklyn and I work for a production studio as an assistant photographer.

This type of art that you do is so difficult, interesting, and I am sure time consuming, that I have a lot of questions for you! I was super impressed with the picture you did of me skating the1/2 pipe with headphones on back in the day, you have obviously been perfecting your technique for quite a while and love what you do - so lets find out more!

What types of art do you do?

Hmm I love painting, drawing, making art in general is my passion, but my mediums of choice are cameras and of course the ETCH-A SKETCH!

How long have you been doing Etch-A Sketch Art?

I started almost 4 years ago while I was working as a toy demonstrator at FAO Schwarz in NYC

What gave you the idea to do this type of art work?

Well I’m kind of obsessed with the color pink so while working at the toy store I found a pink etch a sketch and bought it for the novelty of it. I had never had one before, even in my childhood, but I loved the color so I got it lol

How did you learn to do the drawings in such detail?

I remember playing with Etch-a-Sketch as a kid and it was hard!    I have always drawn my whole life so that part was there, but it took a lot of trial and error in order to perfect the shading part. Keep in mind that it is one continuous line so shading and creating depth can be tedious

Where do you find your inspiration for a new piece?

I always etch something that means something to me. Something that makes me happy, a person that inspires me, or someone or something I care about.

I know you skateboard and some of your pieces involve skaters - are skateboarders your favorite subject?

Yes!! I love skateboarding so much so why not combine my two loves!

What do you find the most exciting about doing this type of art?

The smiles and shock on people’s faces! It feels nice to make people happy, and especially through my art

What do you find to be the most frustrating thing about it?

Hmmm I guess when people say “you must have too much time on your hands”...I get that a lot!

How long does it take you to do an average etch-a-sketch piece?

On average it takes me anywhere from 5-6 hours...Of NON STOP knob turning! I don’t stop to eat, drink, no bathroom breaks, nothing! Just go until it’s done! It’s extreme meditation to me

What do you do with them after you are done?

I enjoy them for a while, take a good picture and eventually shake them and start again!

Have you ever been super attached to a piece only to lose it (via the sand/erasing motion)?

Well I wouldn’t say attached, but I did one of a friend and brought it to a show at Skate Brooklyn skateshop and the music was so loud it fell off the shelf and completely erased...or at least that’s what I hope happened! Lol! I just found it blank! Bummer!

Tell us a bit about the random pieces of art that you do in stores and then just leave them there. I think this is street art at it's finest!   Haha!! Oh man, that’s just for fun! I’ve done a few at Targets and Kmart, but the best was when I did one at FAO Schwarz with the words I  <3 NYC
and the skyline and as I walked away from it a lady taps me and says “excuse me, can I buy this?” and I was like “sure.” Haha!

Do you sell any of your pieces?

Currently I have not, they’re hard to preserve, and right now it’s just a hobby that I love

Can someone commission you to do one for them?

I’ve had a lot of people ask “can you do one of my dog, kids, parents etc, but I usually don’t do them, as mean as that sounds. Only because right now it’s just fun for me, I like to do things that I’m passionate about, but maybe one day...

Do you have a sponsorship deal with Etch-a-Sketch?

No, but that would be SWEET!

Any plans for a show in the near future?

I’ve actually been in two shows, but I would definitely like to do more!

What would you like people to know about you and your amazing art?

I love life!

What's your fav place to skate?

I have to say Riverside skatepark. It’s the first skatepark built by Andy Kessler in NYC and the first place to give me a taste of transition, last summer. Before then, I just pushed long distance on a longboard.

Any thoughts to add as a fellow skateboarder?

Do it because you love it

Anything else I may have forgotten that you'd like people to know?

I’d like people to know about one of my most special pieces. It’s a piece I did of a girl names Alexandria Rice. Alix was killed by a drunk driver while riding her longboard and her story touched my heart in unimaginable ways. I never got the pleasure to meet her, but the friendship I gained with her family has blossomed into the friendship I would have had if we met. They are working tirelessly in an effort to build a skatepark in her memory. Please check out AlixRice.com to learn how to help and learn more about this amazing girl.

Thank you so much Danielle for sharing your art with us and for telling us about Alix Rice & the skatepark being built in her memory - we are jumping over now to donate and hope others will do the same.     xx

Stand Up. Speak Out. Create CHANGE.

 Photo: Eddie Jim

13 yr old surfer Olive Bowers is standing up for girls everywhere. She didn't like the images of women she saw - non surfing, bikini clad models, not the inspirational surfer girls out there she looks up to - when she looked at TRACKS SURF MAGAZINE, so she did something about it. She wrote the magazine a letter and created a wave of support, which will hopefully lead to change.

If a 13 yr old girl can stand up for herself & other girls, can you imagine what it would be like out there if all of us stood side by side when other women were portrayed in a negative or unflattering way?  Something to definitely think about...

Read what Olive had to say below.

Dear Tracks Surf Magazine,

I want to bluntly address the way you represent women in your magazine. I am a surfer, my dad surfs and my brother has just started surfing.
Reading a Tracks magazine I found at my friend’s holiday house, the only photo of a woman I could find was ‘’Girl of the month’’. She wasn’t surfing or even remotely near a beach. Since then I have seen some footage of Stephanie Gilmore surfing on your website, but that’s barely a start.
I clicked on your web page titled ‘’Girls’’ hoping I might find some women surfers and what they were up to, but it entered into pages and pages of semi-naked, non-surfing girls.
These images create a culture in which boys, men and even girls reading your magazine will think that all girls are valued for is their appearance.
My posse of female surfers and I are going to spread the word and refuse to purchase or promote Tracks magazine. It’s a shame that you can’t see the benefits of an inclusive surf culture that in fact, would add a whole lot of numbers to your subscription list.
I urge you to give much more coverage to the exciting women surfers out there, not just scantily clad women (who may be great on the waves, but we’ll never know).
I would subscribe to your magazine if only I felt that women were valued as athletes instead of dolls. This change would only bring good.
Olive

LOVE what you are doing Olive - keep up the good work!

P.S. If you are wondering "why" I didn't post a hyperlink to Tracks Surf Magazine, the reason is I have NO desire to send any internet traffic their way - our support is for Olive, not to drive up their hits on their website.

xx
The HTC One Skatepark in London Opens.

Photographer: Sam Ashley/ Prime & Fire   Skater: Tom Knox

So stoked I can finally share all this news & pics with you!  The new HTC ONE SKATEPARK in the Old Selfridges hotel in London (adjacent to the Oxford Street department store) is opening tomorrow!

Yep, a full skatepark open to the public (and it's FREE) with two distinctive areas - one replicates some of London's famous skating spots - like the Big Ben Gap and the Moorgate handrail. The second area is set with obstacles inspired by the pop up shop (celebrating skate culture x fashion) Selfridges is doing in their store next door.

They will also have skate nights hosted by brands like Sidewalk Magazine, Kingpin Magazine, and more. For the girls, I hear Cooler Magazine (one of our favs!), is having a girls skate night at the park. Can't wait to see pics from that & post them for you guys.

The park is designed & managed by Prime & Fire and is a joint venture between Prime & Fire, Selfridges & HTC.  It's part of Selfridges "Board Games" concept store which celebrates the worlds of surf x skate via a high fashion filter - featuring fashion designers like Stella McCartney & Jimmy Choo & Streetwear designers such as the Billionaire Boys Club. The pop up store is something you don't want to miss!

So if you are anywhere near London here are the details on the skatepark - take advantage of it now as it's only here to skate until April 19th!:

Monday - Friday 12pm-9pm
Saturday 10am-9pm
Sunday 12pm-6pm

Location:  The Old Selfridges Hotel / Adjacent to the Oxford Street store  /  Entry via Orchard Street

Nearest Tube: Bond Street

Now get over there, skate and post some pics for us!

Who's Rad? Jordan Abraham.

I had the privilege of hanging out with Jordan this past weekend at Venice Skatepark where we did a little photo shoot together, and I have to say, the girl attacks coping.  She showed up and seemed very quiet and unassuming, but once she dropped into that pool it was another story. Numerous boys stopped to watch her fluid style as she used every part of the pool & made it her own. I'm excited to see what she does this year in the contests coming up. In the meantime, keep your eye out for the girl who quietly drops in, throws a grind right where you are standing, and casually skates away with a slight smile on her face.  Yep, that's Jordan.
