Women's Events At The X Games in Austin.

It's that time.  The X Games are HERE! So many rad girls competing in Austin, and we love seeing that ESPN has a whole site post dedicated to them!  Read on to see the TV schedule and what events women are competing in this weekend.

Women are competing in 3 events this weekend at the X Games, Skateboard Street, Enduro X, & Flat Track.

But the only two events that have designated female only categories are; Skateboard Street and Enduro X. Last night we saw Shayna Texter compete against her brother, and Nicole Mess competing against her husband in the flat track competition. Now that's pretty badass!

Tune in tonight from 7-11 PM to see women's Enduro X (keep your eye on Tarah, she is the most decorated woman in X Games history) and Saturday from 2:30-3:45 EST to see women's Skateboard Street.

Lacey Baker / X-Games.

Great interview with pro skateboarder Lacey Baker over on CraveOnline today. Lacey discusses what it's like working full time and competing at the highest level, like this weekends X-Games. It's a great read and sheds a light on what women in our sport do to keep themselves in the game.

We still have a ways to go, but girls like Lacey are out there making sure our collective voices are heard by charging hard!

6 Inspirational Skater Girls To Follow On Periscope.

Periscope is fairly new, but as we mentioned HERE, more and more female skateboarders are jumping on this new app to share what they are doing and we love that!

Just this past week we've seen Brighton Zeuner, Sarah Thompson & Jordyn Barratt, skating the Zeuner's back yard half-pipe in San Diego one afternoon. We've caught glimpses of slalom racer and #Badassskatemom founder Judi Oyama's slalom race from Northern California this past weekend. And we are looking forward to catching up with our favorite female skaters across the world to see what they are up to as well. The Periscope community is growing fast!

Here are some rad skater girls we think you should follow on Periscope and why.

Photo: Transition Photography

Poppy Starr Olsen:  She is one of the top female amateur skaters in the world , she makes jewelry and does beautiful art work, and she has became a wonderful motivational speaker. And she is all of 15 years old. You can't get a more inspirational feed than this. Oh, and did we mention she is coming to you live from Australia?

Photo Via Stess Family

Minna Stess:  Keep your eye on this pint sized 9 year old because you never know where she will be skating next - or what she will be launching off!  From skating off the top of mini-vans, to riding the Mega Ramp at Woodward West, we can now live vicariously through Minna's day via this app. She also has a rad skate park in her own backyard so we can only imagine what's coming up that we can view this summer on her feed.

Photo via Judi Oyama

Judi Oyama: She isn't called the "Badass Skate Mom" for nothing. She's an old school pro vert skater, she's still hitting the skatepark and avidly racing slalom (and winning!). Her skate adventures, and her dog Cooper, are definitely worthy of taking a 5 minute break from your day to watch!

Brighton Zeuner:  From the massive back yard half-pipe in her own backyard Brighton and her friends film their sessions regularly. Fun hearing the Periscope app ding with an alert, and catching a session with Brigthton's & her friends. They get super interactive and ask their followers what trick they want to see next, and also are great at responding to comments you type in - all which makes for a fun, interactive video.

Photo via Lorrie Plamos / Skater Cassie Oseguera

Lorrie Palmos: This amazing skate photographer is always searching out the most interesting people and places to shoot. Can you imagine being a "fly on the wall" during one of her photo shoots with the Santa Cruz Lady Lurkers? Yeah, stay tuned.

Photo via Karen Jonz/profile

Karen Jonz:  She's a super rad top pro skater, she models, appears on TV regularly and she is one of the most positive people you will ever meet. Plus her feed is coming to you live from Brazil. Prepare to be very envious of the beautiful backgrounds, the amazing skating, and getting to "talk" to Karen via the app is an added bonus.

We hope you will follow Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word on Periscope as well, because we have a very special announcement we will be making this week!

Girls Who Ride Magazine.

We are absolutely stoked to be featured in GIRLS WHO RIDE Magazine this month!

We aren't going to share the entire article with you, because we want you to go on over to their online edition and check out the entire beautiful magazine yourself.

Great article and photos from photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson and the girls of Skateistan, some wonderful insight from Women in Board & Action Sports on equality in our industry, and more!

You can sign up to get the magazine online for free right HERE - gotta love that!
Congrats To Jordyn Barratt!

Huge congrats going out this morning to skater/surfer Jordyn Barratt!

Jordyn made it to her first ever West Coast Championships and earned 3rd place this weekend! It's Jordyn's first year surfing competitively and when you add that with her successful skateboarding career she is definitely one to watch!

You may have also seen Jordyn's Go Pro video where she discussed that she wants to become the first girl to compete in both the surf and skate events at the Vans US Open.

We think she is well on her way and can't wait to see her achieve that dream.  Yeah Jordyn!!

7 Great Ideas For Your Old Skateboard.

Via 100layercakelet.com
Via fortheloveof.net

Did you get a new board & you aren't sure what to do with your old favorite? Here are some great ideas for using that old deck that you may not have thought of.

1. Have a few blanks or old decks that are the same size?  Make a book shelf.

2. Take your board, cut it, and piece together to make a heart for some cool wall art

3. Have a lot of boards? make an entire wall of skateboard art.

4. Create a one of a kind bookshelf for your house. "How to" on 100 layer cakelet's site

5. This one is a bit harder, but a hanging skate lamp is always an attention getter.

6. Take it outside and make a swing. "How to" on for the love of 's  site

7. Last but not least - donate your old board to a non-profit that is doing great things with your used boards - like our friends at  Bridge to Skate !

Why is The App Periscope Important For Female Skateboarders?

Maybe you've heard of the new app Periscope, or maybe you are already on it.  Either way there are some things we thought we should share about this new social media platform that's everyone's talking about & watching.  Tony Hawk already has 23,272 followers and we noticed that Australian skater Poppy Starr Olsen, Brazilian pro skater Karen Jonz, Brighton Zeuner from Encinitas (coming to you live from her backyard half-pipe), and skate photographer Lorrie Palmos have joined as well.  Great to see the girls on there too!

Here's what you need to know to get started.

What  does the Periscope app do?   It lets you film videos  in real time and share your live feed with a select group of people you choose, or with everyone who has the app and wishes to watch. The choice is yours if you want to share with those you know and approve, or put it out there for the world to see.

Why we think it's an important for female skaters  Next time there is a demo or a just few girls skating in a mainly guys contest and the girls are not included in the live feed, it will give all of us the ability to shoot video LIVE from the event and share it as it happens on the Periscope app. There's no 15 second cut off like Instagram or uploading after the fact, like Facebook. It's like your own personal webcast that goes out worldwide and that is powerful.

Cautions:   It's LIVE. So that means whatever you film or say on camera is out there to be seen immediately. Yes you can delete the video after the fact, but that doesn't mean people haven't already seen it or shared it (yes you can share live feeds on the app). Remember Snap-chat and how you thought it was safe? Same rules apply here. Nothing is really private in the social media world even if you think  it is. Be careful what you film. And respect others privacy if its a dicey situation.

Advice: Go on Persicope immediately, even if you don't think you want to upload anything, and get your user handle before someone else takes it. In a perfect world your FB, Twitter & Instagram should all match name wise to gain the most out of social media and for your followers to find you. Once you pick a name that's it, so choose wisely.

You can also edit your profile anytime you want (but not your user name) so don't worry too much about getting that part dialed in right off the bat.

* The app will connect you via your Twitter page but you can choose another name, other than your twitter name,  if you want to - but only right then, once its locked in, that's it. Twitter will also upload your current Twitter profile - which you can then go back and change at anytime.

Can you only view the videos once?   You can choose to allow your videos to stay on your app profile and they can then be replayed for the next 24 hours, or you can choose to make it "Live Only" which means the video disappears after you close the feed.

Can you save your videos? Only if you switch the toggle in your settings to "Autosave Broadcasts" if you don't do this, your live feed is only viewable on Periscope for the next 24 hours. I say flip that switch and SAVE. You can always delete from your camera roll later.

What else? The app also allows you to send a message to your Twitter followers when you post live, that way they will know you are out there filming and perhaps jump over and tune in. The app also notifies your own Periscope followers when you are streaming live content.

Naming your live feed:  Make sure you label your live feed before you start filming, you can not go back and add it later - I found this out the hard way. My favorite video I posted this morning is still labeled UNTITLED.  Also make sure you give it a title that entices other people to watch. For instance "Girls Demo at Vans Pool Party" would be better than "Hanging in the OC".

Safeguards:   Has someone messaged something that's highly inappropriate to you during your live feed?  Or have you had problems with someone on your other social media platforms and you don't want them seeing what you post? No worries!  You can block them with one easy click of a button.

Is there more? Yes. People can live chat with you as you film so there is instant interaction, you can verbally answer them back as their comments appear on your screen . They can also tap their screens and send you "hearts" - when you see a stream of hearts floating to the top of your screen that's a good thing - it's similar to a "like" on instgaram or FB except they can keep clicking away and send you tons of hearts to let you know they love what you are sharing!

Last but not least:  We hope you will give it a try and when you do, please follow us @GirlisNOTa4LW on Periscope - we have already uploaded content that you can watch immediately and we plan on filming more and adding to our profile in the weeks to come.

Have fun, be safe, and as always, please play nice on social media!

What a great end to a terrific week. First the Skateboarding Hall of Fame on Thursday night (a post with pics on that awesome evening later this week!) where Steve Van Doren was honored with an Icon Award - yes!!  Then the 2015 Vans Pool Party on Sunday where we got to witness some amazing skateboarding. It wasn't just the pro skaters who were killing it, the masters & legends divisions were some of the most impressive group of skaters to date.

One of my favorite new additions to the Vans Pool Party is the half time show. This year the demo included Vans' Girls Combi Winners - 15 year old Poppy Starr Olsen and 10 year old Brighton Zeuner, eleven year old phenom Asher Bradshaw, and one of my favorite skaters, Mike Rogers from Grind for Life .Vans also presented Mike with a check for $1,000 for his foundation which helps educate, inspire, and also offers financial assistance, for those dealing with cancer and their families.

Many thanks to Steve Van Doren, Kristy Van Doren, Kathy Miranda and crew, Dave Duncan, Bryce Kanights and all the judges, as well as Don & Danielle Bostick  for all their hard work in putting on such an awesome and well run event!

Results Are As Follows:

Pros

1st Tom Schaar
2nd Chris Russell
3rd Pedro Barros

Legends

1st Chris Miller
2nd Steve Caballero
3rd Eric Nash

Masters

1st Bruno Passos
2nd Stephen Revord
3rd Darren Navarette

So proud of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word team rider Minna Stess. Minna is part of an article in The NY Times Magazine that came out today about children who are extreme athletes. Her shoot took place at Minna's favorite spot, The Mega Ramp at Woodward West. All the kids featured here are amazing at what they do, and we are so stoked to see Minna representing  our XS Helmets x GN4LW collab helmet throughout!

Congrats Minna!!

3 Female Skaters Inducted Into 2015 Skateboarding Hall of Fame.

Elissa Steamer / Photo MRZ

This Thursday night is a very special night for all of us in skateboarding. It's the date of the 2015 annual Skateboarding Hall of Fame, a night where we come together to honor our peers, see people we haven't seen in in a while (sometimes it's been years and years). It feels like our high school reunion or our prom, which many of us never attended as we were competing and traveling. Obviously some of us were in different "classes" back then, so meeting skaters who skated before you, or came up after you, is always fun too.

I'd like to introduce you to the three amazing women who are being inducted to the Hall of Fame this year, each one of them has made contributions to our sport that are invaluable and they all have helped pave the way for girls today.

1970's Inductee:  Robin Logan, part of the well known Logan-Earth Ski team and family,  helped facilitate the way for girls doing freestyle and slalom back in the early 1970's. She later transitioned to vert but kept her flowing style from her freestyle days intact, which made her a favorite with well known skate photographers.  Robin also took part in ABC's "Wide World of Sports- Battle of the Sexes" and took first place in slalom. Robin was also the very first female skateboarder to get her own signature model board which was produced by Logan-Earth Ski.

1980's Inductee:  Cara-Beth Burnside was always a trailblazer. Shredding vert from an early age, Cara-Beth was the very first female skater to have her own collab skate shoe which was produced by Vans. She was also the first female skater to appear on the cover of Thrasher Magazine. Later she turned to snowboarding and made the first Olympic snowboard team competing in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. She co-founded The Alliance & also runs Hoopla Skateboards, both with fellow pro skater Mimi Knoop.

1990's Inductee:  Elissa Steamer is often referred to as the godmother of street skating. Elissa helped shape the street skating genre for girls with her aggressive, but fluid style. She was the first female skater to appear in a skateboard video game (as a playable player)  She has also appeared in numerous core street skating videos & she has been a pro rider for some of the top street skating companies, such as Toy Machine, Bootleg, and Baker over the years.  Elissa has five  X-games medals to her name - four gold and one silver.

Full list of male and female inductee's, plus the icon awards recipients are as follows:

2015 Skateboarding Hall of Fame Inductees:

1960s Brian Logan
1970s Era One - Henry Hester
1970s Era Two - Duane Peters
1980s Era One - Neil Blender
1980s Era Two - Chris Miller
1990s John Cardiel
1970s Female - Robin Logan
1980s Female - Cara-Beth Burnside
1990s Female - Elissa Steamer

2015 Skateboarding Hall of Fame Icon Award Recipients:

Congrats to everyone listed above - you are all worthy of this honor and it's going to be an amazing night!
