Olivia has only been skating 8 short months, but she has already caught the attention of  OG pro skater Jonny Miller who told us we really had to see the progression of this young girl. He was right! We are pretty sure that we will be seeing a lot more of Olivia in the coming months, she just scored her first sponsor - Toyland, and we think there will be more to come!

If you saw the Vans live webcast, you know how hard the girls were skating. The huge crowd in the stands was cheering them on, and by the time we got down to the finals it was an all out heavy duty jam session like we have never seen before.

All the girls skated hard, but only 6 could make it into the finals - Alana Smith, Allysha Bergado, Lizzie Armanto, Arianna Carmona, Julz Lynn,  and Nora Vasconcellos made the cut in a very tough field of competitors.

At the end of the final jam session it was Allysha Bergado in 1st, Julz Lynn in 2nd, and Lizzie Armanto in 3rd.

Congrats to all the girls for showing the world what womens skateboarding is all about - it was a GREAT event because of all of you!

Two very different types of physical therapy going on these past few days at the Supergirl Pro and the Van Doren Invitational...

Allysha Bergado and Poppy Starr Olsen decided to give little Brighton Zeuner their own form of PT/spa day before the Supergirl Pro. Must have worked, because Allysha came in 1st, Poppy 2nd, and Brighton 3rd!

Beverly Flood & Jordyn Barratt getting a bit more "qualified" PT at the Vans US Open after the first day of practice. These two skated hard and the crowd in Huntington loved them!

11 stoked girls!

It was a gorgeous,  sunny day in Oceanside for the last day of the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro, and while the top female pro surfers in the world took to the water to compete in the semi finals and finals of the three day event,  some of the top female amateur & pro skaters  took to the vert ramp to show just how far women's skateboarding has come.

Eleven girls competed in the event - Allysha Bergado, Jordyn Barratt, Poppy Starr Olsen, Jordan Beal, Nicole Hause, Bryce Wettstein, Brighton Zuener, Spencer Breaux, Hunter Long, Sierra Kerr, & Amelia Brodka - these girls were on FIRE!  The consistency and level of skating from every single girl throughout the day, both in practice, and during the contest, was amazing. The crowd was cheering them on and they just kept throwing down insane trick after trick. Backside disasters, fast plants, insanely high airs, judo airs - you name it, these girls were doing it.

Podium Results:

1st Place Allysha Bergado
2nd Place Poppy Starr Olsen
3rd Place Brighton Zeuner

And a special award for "best attitude" went to little Sierra Kerr!

Congrats to all the girls for bringing it today - it was definitely up there as one of the best days in women's skateboarding we have ever seen!

Girls Skateboarding in Russia.
Photos: Todd Prince for the Moscow Times

Nice photo gallery in the Moscow Times today about girls in Russia skateboarding, it talks about why they took up skateboarding, and asks them how long they have been skating.

One of the girls had this to say.

Alisa, 25, a stylist, said she tried skateboarding for the first time about 10 years ago. However, she recently took it up again because she ''needs some outdoor exercise'' and biking is not her thing.
Alisa said more girls are skateboarding today partially because it's a fashion trend, but also because skateboards have become more accessible, both in terms of price and variety.

Nice to see that girls all over the world are picking up boards and skating!

Interview With Photographer Todd Fuller.

Beverly Flood / Invert at Tim Brauch Contest
Demarcus James / Frontside Invert
Minna Stess / Rock & Roll slide at Freemont

We heard about photographer Todd Fuller before we actually ever met him.  Some of the female skaters would send us pictures he took of them, and we were amazed. There was a style to his photographs we didn't see too often, especially when it came to shooting with the girls. We followed his work on instagram where he posts pics of not only female skaters, but rad kids like Logan Frank, and the male pros as well. And we were hooked!  Since Todd is at most girls skate events snapping away and posting great shots, we thought you should get to know him...

Name?    Todd Fuller / aka @besuro on Instagram

Where do you live/work?      San Francisco Bay Area

How did you get started in photography?

I had a really nasty foot break that stopped me from being able to skate anymore, so I took up the camera. I had some video and motion picture shooting experience prior to that, so I wasn’t exactly starting from zero.

Evelyn Abad / Frontside Boneless

What type of photography do you do when you are not shooting skateboarding?

I have a hard time being interested in shooting anything else, to be honest. Skateboarding has so many spots, tricks, characters - I never run out of inspiration.

What made you decide to start shooting female skaters?

No conscious decision on my part. To me it’s all just skateboarding. There are a lot of people out there who want to tell other people what is and what is not skateboarding or who is and who is not a skater and I hate that so I’m stoked to see so many young women getting involved and glad to help put those old-fashioned ideas to rest.

Beverly Flood

Are there any skaters you really enjoy working with & why?

People that are positive and confident. I’ve shot a lot with Beverly Flood, she’s always good to work with. Poppy Starr Olsen is pretty amazing. I met her at a contest last year. Logan Frank, before he moved to SoCal. Too many to list, really.

Dezmin Lane / Ollie

What are some of your favorite places to shoot at?

Any backyard pool is good. Derby park in Santa Cruz, Fremont Skatepark and Lake Cunningham all come to mind as well.

Poppy Starr Olsen /  Backside Air

Do you have an all time favorite female skate image that you’ve shot?

Probably the shot of Poppy from last year’s Tim Brauch Memorial Bowl Contest at Lake Cunningham. The sky was just amazing.

Josh Rodriguez / Frontside Hurricane

Any favorite tricks you like to shoot?

Crails, backside disaster, layback grinds, proper slashes, hurricane, nose blunts. Stuff where the skaters body is elongated or twisted are always more interesting than something where the person is basically just squatting down or standing up.

Favorite camera body & lens?

I’m shooting with a Canon 5D mkIII right now. I use the Canon EF 15mm f2.8 for fisheye stuff and a Canon 50mm L f1.2 for street skating or portraits.

Ki Crumpton / Benihana

Do you like to light or do you prefer shooting with natural light?

I shoot at skateparks a lot and there tends to be a lot of visual noise in the background at skateparks, so you try to minimize it any way you can. For me, that generally means using flashes.

Any girls out there you haven’t shot yet but would like to?

Sure - Leticia Bufoni, Julz Lynn, B Zeuner, and a few more that I don’t want to jinx by mentioning names.

Dylan Meikle / invert

Any advice for someone who wanted to get into action sports photography?

Just get out there and do it - You don’t need much to start. Just a camera or an app that lets you have manual control. Don’t get caught up in the technical aspects - you’ll recognize the problems and seek out the solutions as you go.

The Screaming Hand Art Show.

Judi Oyama's art piece for the Screaming Hand Show

The Screaming Hand art show has officially started!  It kicked off in Los Angeles on July 10 with an amazing reception for the artists and it will now be making its way around the world for the next year. The show celebrates 30 years of The Screaming Hand and is a tribute to original artist Jim Phillips.

Legendary artists and skaters like Natas Kaupas, Jimbo Phillips, Justin Forbes, Mark Gonzales, Jason Jessee, Eric Dressen, John Lucero, Keith Meek, Mike Giant, Lucas Musgrave, Steve Olsen, Steve Caballero and more all designed unique versions of the Screaming Hand for the show.

This show is especially meaningful as it features just ONE female artist, Judi Oyama. Judi is a legendary pro skater from the 1970's who rode for Santa Cruz Skateboards &  skated vert and slalom. Judi is still out there skating today, racing in slalom comps and skating any chance she gets. She is also an extremely talented artist with her own design firm and a line of tees called Badass Skate Mom that launched earlier this year.

The piece she created for the Screaming Hand Art show is extremely unique and powerful. She brought an edgy element of femininity to the project in a way that only she can. It was awesome to see it in person, so if the show happens to be in your area you must check it out!

Here is what Judi has to say about her acrylic on canvas 10 x 10 piece :

" I wanted to create a female version of the Screaming Hand. Skateboard Graphics are mostly designed by dudes and being one of the few females in the skateboarding industry doing graphics, I wanted it to have a bit of attitude. I was actually going to do the middle finger bird, but choose to do something a bit calmer. I drew and then scanned my drawing into the computer and reworked it in illustrator, then output it to a museum-quality canvas on a wood frame"

We think its pretty Rad!

If you would like to see all the pieces that are in the show, get a list of where the show is heading next, or listen to an audio tour you can jump on over HERE
