Huge congrats to OG pro skater and Badass Skatemom Judi Oyama for being awarded the N-Men Icon award this weekend. Huge piece of female skate history right here - Judi is the FIRST woman to ever receive the Icon Award.
The N-Men were the answer to the 70's Z-Boys. The crew from NorCal flipped the Z on its side and let the skate world know that skateboarding was alive and well in NorCal with tons of rippers & major skate brands coming from there. They are a hardcore group of skaters and we love that they gave Judi this award and recognition. She's been part of the N-Men crew for a long time and is still shredding!
Judi grew up in the 1970's skating vert, downhill, and slalom, she still skates to this day and is the owner of the brand Badass Skatemom , as well as a powerful behind the scenes force for women in skateboarding. Judi is also a 2x women's World Champion in Slalom.

Fashion x skate pictorial of pro skater Lizzie Armanto in the new issue of Vein Magazine out of Spain. Nice to see a real skater rather than a model pulling off these looks. Congrats Lizzie!
Showing us again that girls can do ANYTHING, here's another great video from Goldie Blox - and we are super stoked to see our friend Sam Gordon in it! GO GIRLS!!
A fun look at little rippers 7 year old Sky & her 4 year old brother Ocean. These AWSM kids headed back to their home in Japan after their month long stay in California that was filled with skating, In & Out Burger, surfing, Pizza Port, contests, parties, & friends. But we know we will be seeing more of them here in California very soon!
P.S. We love seeing Sky rocking our new girls line of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word tee's and her bright pink GN4LW beanie.
Miss you little rippers!!

Bruna from tyler haft on Vimeo.
Another great lesson that there is more to sport than just competition.... Whatever you do, do it for the LOVE of it. Bruna has a great story to share that proves you can create a successful career in action sports that doesn't always involve competitions or rankings.
Professional surfer and international model Bruna Schmitz reveals an intimate first-hand account of her life in the self-titled short film, Bruna.
Bruna, directed and edited by filmmaker Tyler Haft, is an inspiring story of humble beginnings for the professional surfer born and raised in the small fishing community of Matinhos, Brazil. At the age of 9, Bruna discovered a passion for the ocean and surfing, which lead to a future of travel and opportunities beyond the village borders. With these opportunities came difficult sacrifices of leaving family members behind in pursuit of her dreams.
“In the beginning it was hard to face the fact I was traveling alone in the world,” Bruna explains of her teenage years. “Over time, fear and insecurity turned into willpower.”
In 2003, with over 30 surfing titles to her name, Bruna became the youngest surfer to win a Brazilian pro event and soon after signed with Roxy at the age of 14, becoming the youngest Brazilian to turn pro. She then went on to qualify and compete alongside surfing’s elite on the WSL World tour from 2008-2010 before choosing to shift her focus away from competition. Since then, she has amassed an impressive portfolio traveling globally as a Roxy athlete and international model, shooting with Sports Illustrated, Estee Lauder and more. In 2013, she moved to Hermosa Beach, California where she now serves as an ambassador for Roxy, Sambazon, YogaWorks and important causes like Heal the Bay.

Badass Skatemom is proud to announce the sponsorship of Santa Cruz Skatemom and Lady Lurker Melissa Sullivan, adding another working and skating mom to the BASM team roster.
Truth be known, you can be a mom and still have a skate life.
“Finding time to skate is definitely a challenge now with a little one, but it sure makes me appreciate it that much more. When I get a chance to have a session I give it my all, don't hold back and enjoy every second.” says Melissa.
Congrats Melissa!

Poseiden Foundation's 7th Annual Ladies Day at the Berrics was the place to be last Saturday. Over 100 girls came out to skate, try new tricks, meet the pro's, and enter the "Best Trick" contest. The Pro and AM girls had an entire day to themselves to skate The Berrics, and in the afternoon compete for $3,000 in prize money during the best trick contest.Pro skater Lacey Baker took it all when she won all three events - hip, manny pad and the 7 stair and skated away $3,000 richer. Runner ups were Meagan Guy, Christiana Smith and Candy Jacobs. But the day wasn't really about winning a contest, it was more about being with friends, skating, having fun, and raising money for Poseiden Foundation's Humanitarian Outreach program.
Please check out Poseiden Foundation to read more about this weekends event and to learn more about what you can do to help with their mission!
Check out the Longboard Girls Crew in this new commercial for Bouygues Telecom. It's beautifully filmed, and Eider Walls, Ishtar Bäcklund, Lyde Begue, Noelia Otegui, Femke Bosma and Valeria Kechichian are ripping all over the south of France.
Directed by Ty Evans (who did the recent "We Are Blood" skate film and Pretty Sweet), the whole commercial is nothing short of perfect. Nice to see an all girls crew being featured in something this big.
Times are changing, and it's not just the boys being featured in mainstream ads and commercials, these days it's rad girls like these, inspiring other girls to get out and live their dreams. Huge props to Valeria and Longboard Girls Crew for helping make it happen!
You can read more about the shoot and see lots more photos over at Longboardgirlscrew.com
all photos and video via SheShreds
Check out this video by one of our favorite female brands SheShreds, they just dropped their new winter collection and it looks awesome. Their new motto "Fate love the Fearless" is seriously badass!
SheShreds was a sponsor of Exposure Skate and they have been out there empowering and supporting girls & women in action sports for the past two years through snowboarding, wakeboarding, surfing, biking, and skateboarding.
I was stoked to meet some of their team riders when I was at the Maryhill Sheride recently.
Can't say enough good things about Gina Duffy, the founder of this company, and what she is doing to help girls in action sports!
You can check out all the SheShreds products, see bio's on their team riders, and get some rad gear HERE
La Maestra Official Trailer from paul ferraris on Vimeo.
“I don’t hope to become famous, and I don’t want to be looked at as one of the best surfers,” Mayra said. “I just hope to be an inspiration to girls who want to surf.”
I love the statement above from surfer Mayra Aguilar, a 29-year-old second-grade teacher who became the first female surfer from her tiny Baja, Mexico, fishing village of 300 people.
It's an excellent reminder that surfing and skateboarding are supposed to be FUN. Contests, money, fame, are fleeting. How you feel after a good session with friends is what you will remember forever. What you do to inspire the next girl to pick up a board is what matters the most. Trust me. The stoke is always the best part...
This women's surf film film is one I have been waiting for since they started raising funds for it a couple years ago - it's playing tonight in Santa Cruz - More details HERE
