The new Dusters x Girl is Not a 4 Letter Word Board is Out!

Photo of Elise Crigar by Alex Barnes

Check out Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word brand ambassador Elise Crigar doing a hand down FS Rock & Roll while riding our new "It's Not About Pretty" cruiser board. This rad board is shaped just like the old school pool boards our founder, Cindy Whitehead, used to ride back in the day.

Dusters California really helped us take this new board to the extreme in both performance and design - while it's made for cruising, you may find yourself doing some soul skating right into the snake run or bowls at your local skatepark.

With it's custom leopard grip tape, metallic gold print and rails, slant 5.0 trucks in gold, 1/8" riser pads and 62mm x 31mm 83A wheels and punk style artwork by Cindy Whitehead, this new board is pretty sweet.

This time we are giving a portion of the sales from each board sold back to Exposure Skate, a 501C3 non-profit that helps girls all over the world in skateboarding, and we are stoked on the work they do.

So get out and shred - because "It's Not About Pretty" -  it's about being RAD.

You can get the Dusters x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word "INAP" board right now at Warehouse Skateboards - they even have FREE shipping

12 Things to Know About Skateboarding & The Olympics.

 Photo Ian Logan

We've heard lots rumors and questions floating around about skateboarding in the Olympics, so we thought we'd put together a series of articles, and update you as things change,  so you know what's really happening.

For some skateboarders it's a very exciting time to think about skateboarding's possible inclusion to the Olympics, to others, it is something they are very much against. This article is to provide information, and answer questions that people are asking - pro or con.

I heard skateboarding is definitely being included in the Olympics - is that true?

It's still up for inclusion - no final announcement has been made.

When will they make the final decision?

The announcement will be made in August 2016

What year would it be in Olympics, and where would it be?

Not until 2020, in Tokyo, Japan

Will it be vert, street, or bowl skateboarding?

It looks like it's between street and bowl at the current time. We are also seeing a shift towards "Park Terrain".

We keep hearing the initials  IOC - what does that stand for?

International Olympic Committee

What is the age requirement for the Olympics?

There is no specific age limit for taking part in the Olympic Games. This depends on each International Sports Federation and the rules it lays down for its sport. So right now we have no idea what age they will lay down for skateboarding.

Just to give you an idea - you may remember that in 2014, snowboarding sensation, 13 year old Chloe Kim, qualified for the Olympics but was too young to be able to compete, as snowboarding's Olympic Games age limit was 15 years old.

Who will be in charge of skateboarding leading up to the Olympics?

That too, is still up for debate. Right now the skateboarding industry is heavily supporting Gary Ream and the International Federation of Skateboarding (ISF) as the group they'd like to be in charge.

More info on that via Transworld Business:

It was announced this week that Vans and it's Vans Pro Park Series has partnered with ISF to create the first ever "Park Terrain World Champion Points Ranking System" to create and uphold guidelines to define and elevate the park terrain discipline worldwide by establishing the premier global points ranking system for park terrain skateboarding, culminating with the official crowning of a park terrain world champion for men and women this August in Malmö, Sweden. The goal of the partnership will promote an influential global platform for organized skateboarding, showcasing expert athleticism while maintaining the unique culture and values of skateboarding.

There are four qualifier comps in this series worldwide for the men, the one women's comp will be held July 30, 2016 in Huntington Beach, California. The World Championships will be held in Malmö, Sweden on August 20, 2016.

What changes are being put in place right now that benefit female skaters?

We've seen some already, the inclusion of women in Street League for one. The WSA (Women's Skateboarding Alliance) and Skate Like a Girl's,  "Wheels of Fortune" comp coming up on May 6-8, 2016 in Seattle acts as a wild card qualifier for the upcoming X Games. More companies are looking to sponsor female skaters, and support for women's skateboarding is growing within the industry. Prize money has also risen slightly.

Why are we just seeing these things now?

Because any new sport included into the Olympics must include both sexes, and our skateboarders, male and female must have a points system in place and a series of contests that can later act as qualifiers for the Olympic berth. Much in the way snowboarding did when it was included in the Olympics.

In the past this wasn't always the case, female ski jumpers had to fight the IOC to be included and were only added into the Olympics in 2014. Since ski jumping for men has been an Olympic sport for 90 years, the women's division wasn't a given and the girls in the sport fought long court battles to be included.

How many skateboarders get to go to the Olympics?

Three skateboarders from each country, male and female, will go and there will also be an alternate in case of injury, illness, etc.

Are all the girls we see competing in USA contests up for the USA slots?

No, some girls like Poppy Starr Olsen (Australia) and  Leticia Bufoni (Brazil) would be competing for their home country. Another example,  Amelia Brodka was born in Poland, so she could choose which country, Poland or USA, she would like to qualify for. Any girl who may live in the USA, but has dual citizenship could choose to compete for another country other than the USA.

How many countries can really send skaters to compete at the level we see here in the USA?

You'd be surprised!  We have spoken to people in Iran, and those girls are training now to compete. Russia has girls who are already at top levels as well. Skateboarding is happening everywhere in the world, some places are a bit behind us at the moment, but if skateboarding is included in the Olympics they will have four years of training under their belt, so keep that in mind. Just because we see most skate coverage coming from the USA doesn't mean these other countries are not preparing.

Please let us know any Olympic questions you may have - we will try to find answers and post them here!

Katherine Beattie First Female Ever To Do A Wheel Chair Backflip - Insane!

You probably saw our post today about rad girls Katherine Beattie and Jamey Perry who we met by chance, at Venice Skatepark yesterday. Well, check out Katherine is this video from Woodward West and see what they have to say about this rad athlete.

Via Woodward West:

Katherine Beattie is an adaptive sports athlete for Box Wheel Chairs and WCMX. Katherine suffers from Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy, also known as Spastic Tetraplegia, that affects all four limbs (both arms and legs). This does not stop Katherine's determination to come back to Woodward West and take another chance at being the first-ever female WCMX athlete to land the coveted and sought after backflip on her wheelchair. Using Woodward West signature foam pits and Resi she will be able to see it and feel it come to life. Will she make it? Check it out as she hucks her flip at one of the only places capable of making her dream come true.

Stay tuned here on the GN4LW site as we plan to do an interview with both Katherine and Jayme in the very near future!

Here' the history and additional  info about this awesome contest.

Vert Attack 10 year anniversary.

The idea behind Vert Attack was to create something unique for skateboard fanatics, especially vert lovers. We wanted to create an annual event where you could meet like-minded people and really enjoy a good vert session. Bryggeriet has always had a good vert ramp, a bit smaller with old school dimensions. A ramp that works for all kind of skaters.

When we started Vert Attack in 2006 vert skating only existed at the arenas and that’s were we saw the opportunity to create something that was for everyone, where focus wasn’t the prize money but more for the session and meeting of other skateboarders. At Vert Attack, everyone’s invited and it’s the people who make the trip and bring their passion to the comp that make it. Year after year they make Vert Attack what it is.

We have reached the tenth anniversary of Vert Attack. It’s been an amazing journey and each year has topped the last one. Vert Attack has grown to become something we couldn’t even dream about. We’ve had so many amazing skateboarders participating, legends like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Christian Hosoi, women like Lizzie Armanto, Alana Smith and Julz Lynn, juniors like Evan Doherty, Tate Carew and Matty Carlisle and established and upcoming professionals like Sam Beckett, Jimmy Wilkins and Chris Russell. There’s been too many to mention basically but there’s still a few more riders on the wish list that we are hoping for this year.

Together with Vans we have set the stage for an amazing tenth anniversary, the greatest vertical freak show on earth, filled with entertainment in the form of live music, exhibitions, presentations and most important of all, the main attraction the Vert show.

Please join us in the celebration on the 31st of March – 2nd of April at Bryggeriet Malmö Skatepark and if you can’t make it over you can follow the web cast on Saturday the 2nd of April for all the final action of the festivities.
"How To Skateboarding" With Pro Skater Hunter Long.

Pro skateboarder and Hoopla team rider, Hunter Long has started releasing a new series called "How to Skateboarding" videos on her website. We love how she teaches the "rock to fakie" trick easily by telling you what you need to do, showing you and discussing it a bit more,  and then doing it herself. Great video to help you learn this trick!

Follow Hunter on her site to see when the next "How to Skateboarding" video is posted!
The Skater Girls Of North Carolina Downhill Rally Back.
Suez on the NCDH road trip  / Photo Phill Baldwin

About a month ago we received this letter, and we had to read it twice to fully understand that funding for a longboard skate trip had been pulled because 2 female skaters were going to be included. Read on and be prepared to smile after the stuff that will make your blood boil.

My name is Ashley Winecoff and I am I sophomore at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

I am contacting you today in search of some help in way of support for a trip me and my friends at NCDH (check us out on FB and Instagram) are planning for spring break in a couple weeks. The trip consists of the NCDH crew renting a van and traveling through the blue ridge mountains skating the best roads they have to offer.

In the past this trip has been partially skater funded and partially funded by a local skate apparel company. However in the past this trip has been only boys due to lack of female downhill skaters but within the past year myself and my friend Suez Hogue have been graciously accepted and encouraged by the boys of NCDH and they were more than stoked to have us join them on the trip but the apparel company did not share this sentiment.

The owner of the company did not want to see girls on this trip so the NCDH crew chose not to accept the funds from him because they wanted us to feel wanted and included.

Later, the company ended up helping us out a little but not as much as they had given in the past. I'd like to say that in the end it worked out for the better because we were able to get other rad companies on board instead of just having one exclusive sponsor.

WOW. We were stunned and super proud of these guys who stood up for Ashley and Suez, so we asked Ashley to write a little something about their skate trip and get some rad pics of her and Suez that we could post. It's our small way of showing this apparel company that girls do have a voice and people are interested in seeing them skate.

Here is what Ashley had to say about the trip.

Ashley doing what she loves.  / Photo Phill Baldwin

Two weeks out from Shine Run and I'm still stoked.

Suez said it best,  "It was an awesome trip to be on with such a wide range of personalities. Every person that you skate with adds something different to the experience and every new experience becomes somethings you've learned from. You can experience a lot in a week when you're shredding with some of the best skaters NC has to offer."

Suez having the trip of her life   / Photo Phill Baldwin

I only have good things to say about my experience. Skating with people with so much more experience means always having people to help you get better because they have likely faced the challenges you are facing and the NCDH crew is always stoked to help you get better.

This was my first skate trip and it has left me itching for more!

So stoked for these girls and love their story!
