Check out our friend Kala dancing in the Target commercial - Kala is a skater but ended up doing a rad dance on set, which target loved.  We also spy Relz and Peta from the Pink Helmet Posse and "Miss Lucy In The Skye" aka Luzila Skye Ashley-Castillo who is a rad little WCMX girl.

Nice job Target, we like seeing these rad young girls in your ads.

The Australian Bowl Riding Championships saw more girls than ever competing, 17 in total ranging from ages  9 to 27 in an open Girls Division.  Saturday's qualifiers were amazing, the girls were ripping and it was anyone's guess who'd make Sunday's finals.  With some of the American girls staying after Bowl-A-Rama to compete in this event, it was sure to be exciting.

The top five advancing to the finals were Poppy Starr Olsen (AU), Hunter Long (USA), Amelia Brodka (POL), Ruby Trew (AU), Izy Mutu (AU), and Shanae Collins (AU).

Sunday saw rain delay's and the girls had to skate after one big storm, but the bowl dried up pretty quickly and the contest was back on its way.

At the end of the finals, it was Poppy Starr Olsen in 1st, Amelia Brodka in second, Shanae Collins 3rd, Izy Mutu 4th, Hunter Long 5th, and Ruby Trew 6th.

Congrats to all the girls for an event that was exciting to watch!

FLYING DOUGHNUTS - Sabre Norris from Luke Farquhar 🇦🇺 on Vimeo.

Great mini documentary on 11-year-old surfer Sabre Norris and her siblings, Nazzie, Biggie, and Sockie on BeachGrind TV.  The Norris kids are as fun and crazy as they are on instagram - love that.  Be prepared to laugh a lot, at the kids just being kids and the stories Sabre tells about surfing, donuts and her good friend and pro surfer Stephanie Gilmore.

Derek Rielly and director Luke Farquhar did an excellent job on this one!

We hope your days are as fun as Sabre's seem to be!

Skate x Fashion Collabs Or Rip Offs? We're Seeing Both.
Ben Taverniti "Bones Logo" Pink Satin Jacket

Ben Taverniti "Bones Logo" Sweatshirt

Ben Taverniti "Screaming Hand" sweatshirt

We used to see skateboard companies ripping  riffing off fashion brands - does anyone remember the year 2000 when Supreme used the Louis Vuitton logo for all of about 2 weeks until they were hit with a cease and desist letter?  They complied very quickly and that was the end of that.

Or how about the time the shoe was on the other foot and fashion designer Jermy Scott stole the iconic Jim Phillips "Screaming Hand" artwork and used it on clothes that walked down his runway during fashion week? That was a pretty bold move that earned them a lawsuit which Jim ended up winning.

These were instances that were far and few in-between. But now that we are seeing a huge interest in skateboarding by the fashion crowd it's happening more and more. But we are also seeing some unlikely collaborations as well.

We're not 100% sure but we are thinking that the Bones logo and the Screaming Hand logo in the photos above may have been "lifted" by designer Ben Taverniti's "Unravel Project". They are selling out quick at Barneys NY - with the pink jacket on pre-order for $1,475 and the oversized distressed black sweatshirt and gray "screaming hand"  sweatshirt going for a cool $570.

Louis Vuitton X Supreme Collab - launching July 2017

On the flipside iconic skate brand Supreme did a collab with Louis Vuitton that is 100% authentic and above board. Considering that so many fashion people are into Supreme already, it's doubtful that this collab hurts their brand from a core skate standpoint.

Although I highly doubt any skater we know will be buying the "skate box" that comes complete with a board, trucks, wheels and a skate wrench. (Think Louis Vuitton price points here)

Thrasher Hits Back at H&M for using its "Flame Logo"

H&M decided to do their own take on the Thrasher look with a tee that says TRIPPIN with the iconic Thrasher flames, font, and colorway. Thrasher is hitting them hard with a cease and desist, and H&M is battling back. But as always, Thrasher has the final say even on their Instagram post - The "F-Off H&M"  was a great parting shot and very typical for our industry.

Supreme x Vans SK8-HI Pro Shoe Collab

Now this one we can totally get behind - two major skate brands coming together to create a retro inspired shoe with the Supreme logo intertwined in the iconic checkerboard pattern. So simple but so rad!

So the question is, is it good for skateboarding's unique style to be appreciated and used by mainstream fashion?

Or does it make us feel that the underground, rebel feel we have had all these years is losing its mystique?

It's Not About Pretty: A Book About Radical Skater Girls

“It’s Not About Pretty: A Book About Radical Skater Girls”

Pro Skateboarder & Founder of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word, Cindy Whitehead, Releases the First Comprehensive Photography Book About Female Skateboarders

Female empowerment, social equality, and a male dominated sport. It all boils down to one thing. Girls who skateboard are becoming more popular than ever in mainstream media, but until now there has never been a book showing just how unique these skater girls really are.

The new photography book, “It’s Not About Pretty” showcases the female empowerment skateboarding brings to girls and women, alike. The book reminds us that girls are not just pretty faces and should strive for so much more in today’s world.

These girls are RAD. They are renegades, and they are fearless. They have consciously decided that it doesn't matter what age or gender you are, you go after what you love. They fall hard, and they get back up. They keep pushing and they never give up. As skateboarders, it's ingrained in them. They don't skate for the medals, trophies or public acclaim. They do it because it's who they are. These girls are smashing gender stereotypes into tiny bits, hitting glass ceilings so hard they shatter into a million pieces and they are kicking ass and taking names. They are authentic and real and don't take no for an answer. For these girls it's not about being pretty, it's about being pretty radical.

"It's Not About Pretty" is the FIRST comprehensive photography book to be published on girls skateboarding. The 8x10 hardcover book is 144 pages and features 65 different skater girls, from age five to just over fifty years old. From pool riding, park, street, downhill, vert, and cruising, to pro female skateboarders and soul skaters - this book covers it all.

Author Cindy Whitehead has led the fight for women’s equality in skateboarding ever since she conquered the male-dominated profession of pro-vert skateboarding in the 70’s. To this day, she is still the only female to be featured in the centerfold of a skateboarding magazine with a two-page article, her skateboard history has been taken into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Sports History collections, and her TEDx talk has empowered girls everywhere. Cindy was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame on May 13, 2016, with an introduction by legendary feminist, and Rock & Roll icon, Joan Jett. Cindy is also the founder of the movement “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word” whose goal is to give girls in action sports the same opportunities and recognition as their male counterparts.

“Women and girls in skateboarding are capable, they’re interesting, and they’re worthy,” says Whitehead, “When girls pick up a book about skateboarding, I don’t want them to see just guys; I want them to see smart, talented, ambitious girls who are doing things they love and kicking the ass out of social norms.”

The book is illustrated throughout, with powerful imagery by award-winning photographer Ian Logan, and graphic design by Elise Crigar.

Each book comes sealed, with a beautiful dust jacket, and a 15x19 poster inside featuring 1 of 4-skater girls.

A portion of the proceeds of the book gives back to 501c3 non-profits that create exposure and opportunities for girls in skateboarding.

The “It’s Not About Pretty” book will be available in bookstores everywhere, as well as on Amazon.com starting February 21, 2017.

The “It’s Not About Pretty” book retails for $35.00 USD.

Women's Finals Results + Photos From Bowl-A-Rama.

Sari Simpson
Jordyn Barratt
Brighton Zeuner
Poppy Starr Olsen
Amelia Brodka

Bowl-A-Rama, Bondi Beach, AU - The field was narrowed down to just five girls for the finals on Sunday and Sari Simpson, Jordyn Barratt, Brighton Zeuner, Amelia Brodka and Poppy Starr Olsen brought their "A" game. Gone were the nerves and mishaps they encountered the previous day and in their place were solid, technical runs with speed and perfect execution, that had the crowd on their feet cheering for each and every one of them.

Sari Simpson had even more speed whipping through the bowl than on the previous day - if that is even possible - she pulled off that disaster in the corner like it was nothing.  Amelia pulled off her Crail slide and every other trick she tried - smooth like the pro she is. Brighton was technical and stylish nailing it on every single wall with back to back tricks - an extremely well thought out line.  Poppy nailed her signature "fast plant" and was using the pool like her own personal playground. Jordyn Barratt had a run that was so perfect it had the crowd on its feet, hands in the air, cheering for her. Ultimately it was that perfect run that won her first place and a very large pink wrestling belt as her trophy!

We also loved seeing that Poppy, Nicole, and Hunter were out there doing the "highest air"  contest at the end of the event - way to go girls!

PODIUM RESULTS

Jordyn Barratt        1st place

We'd like to thank General Pants  Bowl-A-Rama, Frontside Productions, Bashful, Magnum & Co,  for having us. And special thanks to photographer Tiffany J. Williams for getting out there both days during practice and during the heats to get us these awesome shots!

We hope you caught the comp last night via the live web feed from Bowl-A-Rama.  Our photographer Tiffany Williams was there capturing all the action for us and we are stoked to be posting her photos this morning!

There were a couple surprises last night for sure. The first one was that USA's Allysha Le couldn't make it and was replaced by rad local Shenae Collins.

The girls were divided into two heats, and we saw a bit of a rough start for all of the girls on their first runs. Gracie Earl showed some nice style during her runs with grinds in both deep and shallow ends, Nicole Hause was blasting some major air off of the front wall, but unfortunately, it just wasn't enough to get her into the finals after she took a fall on each run. Hunter Long looked smooth and rad as always throughout, but a couple falls cost her those couple extra points, Amelia Brodka had a really solid run and you could hear the crowd cheering when she did her signature "crail".  Poppy Olsen had a rough run to start out, but on her third, she steadied her nerves and showed us why she is the queen of Bondi Beach.

At then end of the first heat, it was  Poppy in first place, Amelia in second, Hunter in third, Gracie in 4th and Nicole in 5th.

Heat 2 had us watching Brighton Zeuner who simply destroyed that pool in all 3 of her runs,  Shenae Collins had a couple of rough starts but looked like she was still having fun, local fan fav, Izy Mutu attacked the bowl like only she can, Sari Simpson was FAST - we've never seen one of the girls speed through those tricky corners like she did, and Jordyn Barratt showed us again that she delivers well under pressure - with one run left she gave a solid performance that landed her straight into tonight's finals.

The women moving into tonight's finals are:

Brighton Zeuner - USA
Poppy Starr Olsen. - AUS
Amelia Brodka - POL
Jordyn Barratt - USA
Sari Simpson - AUS

Breakfast With Lizzie Armanto and Tony The Tiger.

We cruised up to Hollywood to sit down and have a bowl of cereal with pro skateboarder Lizzie Armanto and we had a chance to discuss her new partnership with Kellogg's Cinnamon Frosted Flakes "Let your Gr-r-reat out campaign", women's skateboarding, and her hectic schedule as a pro skateboarder.

It should be mentioned that Lizzie started skating at age 14 and her rise in the sport has been nothing short of meteoric. At only 24 years old she has been leading the charge to bring women's skateboarding into mainstream media for the past few years and she's smoothly paving the way for the next generation. She gives credit to the people around her that have helped her along this path, she wants to make sure I know it's not just her alone making it all happen, that she has a lot of good people guiding and supporting her. But at the end of the day, it is Lizzie who has to skate and deliver.

Sitting down in a room by the pool at the iconic Mondrian hotel, Lizzie looks relaxed and at ease, even though she has been fielding questions from reporters like myself all day long. Her skateboard sits nearby, and she offers to make me a bowl of the new Cinnamon Frosted Flakes cereal she is helping to promote. The previous evening she spent a late night filming with Tony the Tiger, and while she should be exhausted from her crazy schedule, she's still the consummate professional.

So, Lizzie, it's a bit surreal to be sitting here at the Mondrian eating cereal with you on a weekday - what's up with that?

We're celebrating the release of the new Cinnamon Frosted Flakes because fans were pushing for it. I was stoked that they asked if I wanted to do stuff with Tony the Tiger, plus I just love breakfast. We're doing social media spots, some print stuff, it's been really fun.

Besides promoting the new Kellogg's Cinnamon Frosted Flakes, what else has been on your schedule?

I'm working on two video parts right now. One is mentally a lot, but now that I'm doing two, the pressure is definitely on. Contests are a place where I am really comfortable, where I'm able to do what I know how to do, this whole filming thing has made me feel like I am more of a beginner than I was when I first started doing contests because it's such a different process.  I have had to put a lot more mental energy into it, because I have always looked at contests like, do your best in the next 15 minutes, you go out and do what you feel like, and it's who was there that day that sees and remembers that, but in a video part you have 3 minutes of footage that lives on, so it's bigger than that.

Can you tell us what video parts you are working on?

I'm working on the Thrasher part and also another one for Birdhouse and the due dates are almost on top of each other. Filming is hard in the sense that it takes a lot of planning. I like to feel like I'm just doing whatever, but for filming you have to be like - I'm doing this here - and putting all those parameters on my skating has changed the way I skate, but it's also for the better. I kind of push myself in a new way, which I really like.

You seem to have had quite a busy schedule for awhile now, is it hard to keep that up?

Editors Note: Lizzie's schedule is so packed these days that for the first time in years, she has had to make the hard choice not to compete in some top-tier contests.

I feel like for a long time I pushed for so long to make this all work, then I pushed past that and now I feel like I'm running with it. I'm doing it now and I have to keep the fire up, and I love it and it's fun and amazing, but mentally it's a lot.

There are a lot of obligations, unlike before - now you have deadlines, you have to have so much content, you have to work towards it. It's your own schedule which is nice, but you're never finished because in skating you can always do more, so at some point, you just have to cut it off and say you're done. It's hard to cut yourself off.

When do both these video parts come out?

Thrasher comes out first and then the Birdhouse part - both will be coming out this year.

Any thoughts or advice for girls coming up that are now doing contests?

At the end of the day, everyone is skating because they want to, you can't be bummed that maybe this judge didn't think you were good enough. If you like doing what you do, and you want to do it with your friends or you want to do it in a contest, that's sick, but if you're going to be bummed if someone thinks this or that, or someone wants to put you down, you should know better than that.

I'm not above it, because I know there have been times when I'm upset about something like that but then I have to tell myself "why am I upset? Is that stopping me from what I want to do?".  It's just remembering where to put my energy because there are so many other things I want to do.

That is pretty great advice for every girl out there.

Make sure you keep your eyes out for the Thrasher and Birdhouse videos because we guarantee that Lizzie's parts are going to be well worth watching - over and over.

Thanks to Lizzie and Kellogg's for having us!
