Jordyn Barratt Breaks Barriers Becoming Only Female Skater At LB Dew Tour Stop.
Jordyn skating today at Dew Tour venue in Long Beach /  Photo Joanne Barratt

Pro skateboarder Jordyn Barratt is smashing the hell out of some glass ceilings - she is the only female skater to compete against the men on the Dew Tour which is taking place in Long Beach, California this week.  Jordyn will compete with the guys, starting with qualifiers which take place this Thursday, June 15.

“I’m honored to be the only girl to be invited to compete against the guys,” said Jordyn Barratt. “I can’t wait to compete and wish everyone the best of luck.”

We have been seeing a lot of positive changes in women's skateboarding in the past 6 months, and this one is a good one.

The male-dominated world of skateboarding is also taking notice - The Berrics even posted about Jordyn tonight, acknowledging her achievement!

Congrats Jordyn!

ABOUT JORDYN BARRATT: Eighteen-year-old Jordyn Barratt is a championship skateboarder and surfer who grew up in the surf mecca of Haleiwa, on the North Shore of O`ahu, Hawaii. Jordyn competes in both skateboarding and surfing events around the world and her most recent accomplishments include first place in the Pro Division at the VANS Combi Classic, first place at Bondi Beach and a Bronze Medal at the X Games.

* This post was updated at 7 AM on June, 14 to teflect the change that Jordyn is the ONLY female to compete on The Dew Tour In Long Beach, as Lizzie Armanto and Leticia Bufoni competed in Portland, Oregon back in 2011.

We still feel that this is a huge accomplishment and moving women's skateboarding forward in an extrememly positive manner, and we are extrememly excited for Jordyn.
Pro Skateboarder Lacey Baker In A Stunning New Image For Pride Month.

Image of Lacey Baker by Samuel McGuire - available HERE

Pro skateboarder Lacey Baker  & photographer Samuel McGuire worked together to create this beautiful image of Lacey skateboarding with smoke trailing behind her like a flag, that raises money for the victims of Pulse Orlando.

Here is what Samuel had to say about the project;

"I have wanted to photograph this image of someone skating holding this handmade flag of smoke flares Tom Vanderwall and I made for a while. With June being Pride Month, I wanted to sell prints during June to raise money for the 49 victims who were mercilessly gunned down June 12th in an Orlando night club."

"I was talking with Lacey Baker about the idea when she told me her friend had his coming out party at the club that night and luckily was one of the survivors however some of his friends weren't. I knew the photo had to be with Lacey and so we teamed up to make this photo. "

"Our goal is to raise $4,900 dollars for Pulse Orlando onePULSE Foundation foundation to help set up a memorial as well as many other needs for those affected."

"Be proud every month, but especially this month."

You can order a print now in various sizes starting at a 4x6 for $10.00 up to a 24x36 for $100.00 - all proceeds got to a great cause.

The print is now on sale at Big Cartel

Instagram X Lizzie Armanto - A Boost For Women's Skateboarding.

Instagram posted about pro skater Lizzie Armanto today, and already the numbers are going through the roof. They have also shared an Instagram story about Lizzie, so make sure you catch it before it's gone!

With Instagram's diverse (and huge) following, this means people beyond skateboarding, & even beyond sports, are now hearing, seeing and learning about women's skateboarding. Which means more interest, more eyes and more opportunities for all women in skate.

Big congrats to Lizzie!

Kihana, Brighton, Hanna & Poppy all move on to the X-Games in Minneapolis

Video replay of all the action today from Boise, Idaho

It was a very "hang onto the edge of your seat" kind of day at the X-Games women's park qualifier in Boise, Idaho today. First runs were kept pretty safe in most cases, to get a good solid number on the scoreboard. Hanna Zanzi riding with a cast on her arm, rode like it didn't even hinder her one little bit and immediately took the lead and held onto it for the first two runs, Brighton Zeuner had some falls but came back from it with a flawless run on her third try to upset Hanna for the win. Nicole Hause boosted some huge air, but in the end, it wasn't enough to get her into that top four slot to move onto the X-Games in Minneapolis. Poppy Starr Olsen looked solid w/back to back tricks throughout and took 4th place. This coming season competing in park is looking good for her.  And it was awesome to see Kihana Ogawa who was originally an alternate coming into qualifiers yesterday, take 3rd today and move onto the X-Games.

We have to give big props to eleven-year-old Minna Stess who was the youngest in the field of riders and had 3 great runs - her tricks were varied, her amplitude amazing (especially considering she weighs less than 75 lbs)  and coming from both a street and bowl background, she rides park like it's her own personal playground - Minna finished in 9th place and earned quite a few new fans in the process.

RESULTS

1. Brighton Zeuner          80.33
2. Hanna Zanzi                76.00
3. Kihana Ogawa            75.33
4. Poppy Starr Olsen       74.00

Twenty girls were invited to compete in Women's Park at the X-Games Qualifiers in Boise, Idaho - Alana Smith, Julz Lynn and Nora Vasconcellos couldn't make it to the event,  so alternate, Kihana Ogawa, was moved up to skate.

A move that paid off as Kihana is now in 2nd place heading into tomorrow's final.

The field of 18 female skaters was narrowed down to the 12 who will compete for just 4 spots (+ one wild card slot) at the X-Games in Minneapolis in July. Once there, they will join Lizzie Armanto, Kisa Nakamura, and Jordyn Barratt, who made podium last year and are given automatic invites this year.

Female Skaters At Iconic 70's Skate Spots - Paul Revere.

Photos Ian Logan for Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

We're continuing our series of  taking female skaters to  iconic 70's Southern California skate spots and documenting it. We don't see enough of this and want to encourage more of you to get out of your local skatepark and do the same.

Just about everyone who follows 70's skate history has seen iconic photos taken at Paul Revere school. The famous black asphalt banked walls that mimic a wave have been immortalized in everything from Hugh Hollands book "Locals Only",  to the movie, Dogtown and the Z-Boys, as well as the pages of "Skateboarder Magazine" and of course Kent Sherwood's book "Jay Boy" featuring Jay Adams.

We decided to take two of our favorite soul skaters to this iconic spot, let them loose and see how it went. Two hours later Elise Crigar and Sierra Prescott were still wanting more. From surf style rides acrosss the banked walls, to doubles runs in and under the volleyball nets, to bert slides all over the playground it was seriously a blast.

We encourage you to get out and explore, create, and inspire - you never know what you'll find or how the day will go.

And that's pretty bitchin'.   xx

Brighton Zeuner Is The Featured Skater On New X-Games Posters!

The X-Games are coming up fast - July 13-16, this time in a new location, Minneapolis!  Great to see 12-year-old phenom Brighton Zeuner on the new X-Games poster.

The girls who are competing in park (with the exception of the three who made podium last year) are heading out to Boise, Idaho June 9 & 10th to qualify, and the competition will be tough. Girls have been flying out to Boise to skate the park for the past month in preparation. If you are anywhere near Boise, make sure you watch all the action go down in person because it will be insane! 20 female skaters competing, and only 4 plus a wildcard, heading to X in July.

But your tickets for X-Games Minneapolis HERE

Female Skateboarders Skating Iconic 70's Skate Spots - Part 2.
Skaters Elise Crigar & Quinne Daniels  /  Photos Ian Logan  / Concept Cindy Whitehead

We decided to start doing local road trips and shooting female skaters at iconic Southern California skate spots. Why? For one, because sometimes you need to get your ass out of the skatepark and go back to where it all started - drainage ditches, banked walls, backyard pools, shifty wooden ramps.
This is how skateboarding started moving from freestyle to vert and it was an exciting period of time. Second, because how many pictures do you see with girls skating these places?

Not that many.

Our first stop was "Hitlers Tunnel" (don't ask me why it has that name - I have no idea), which unfortunately turned to be a bust, as the gate in front of the tunnel was blocked by about 3 feet of debris, and no amount of shoveling was going to change that in a couple hours. We were all bummed, but that is how these road trips go sometimes - so always have a "Plan B".

Elise showing why soft wheels work best in these places

The next place we hit was the famous 70's skate  location "The Vermont Drop" aka "The Funnel" - Elise Crigar, who we had shot at Sunken City earlier in the week, (photos HERE) was up for the challenge, and we decided to add nine-year-old mini shredder Quinne Daniels to the mix so she could get a taste of how it all goes down.

First we taught Quinne about waiting for the police car that was hanging out in the junk yard next door to leave, before jumping the fence. Next was that you always have an industrial broom with you to sweep rocks and debris out of the spot. She quickly found out the difference of skating rough terrain, and figuring out how to skate from flat surface to banked wall when there is very little transition. The girls also learned a bit about skating an old school style board and softer wheels in this situation - sometimes you need to mix up your board set up for optimum results.

One of the best parts of this shoot was when a homeless guy on his bike stopped at the fence and started sharing stories from the 70's of people he had seen skate there - and he knew all their names and which mags they had been in. He said he was stoked to see the Vermont Drop being used again and that he was seeing girls skating it. That conversation made my day. And that's the thing about skateboarding - it doesn't matter how much or how little money you have, where you live, or what you look like - you have a common bond and you meet the coolest people.

We want to encourage girls to go out there and find spots in their city and skate them, take a road trip with your friends and skate. Document it, create female based skate media, post it, share it, inspire other girls.

That is what skateboarding is all about - the stoke of the spot and never knowing what you might find when you trek into someplace or hop that fence - a little dangerous, a bit exciting, but always rad and worth the effort.

So take a chance and get out there and skate something you haven't skated before, create a new line, fall hard, get back up, do it again.

Tag us on your pics - we want to see them! #girlisnota4letterword  #itsnotaboutpretty

Huge thanks to James at South Bay Skates for all his advice, covert directions, taking my numerous calls and sharing his memories with us - we couldn't have done it without you!
Skateboard Wherever You Can. Sunken City.
  Photos Ian Logan

Sometimes you just have to skate wherever & whatever you can and make the most of the adventure. Like having a little 70's style road trip. We had an awesome afternoon exploring Sunken City with soul skater Elise Crigar. And yes that handstand on the rock high above the ocean is as insane as it looks!

Who's Rad? Sari Simpson.

Photo Dean Tirkot

We'd seen photos of Sari on instagram for quite awhile and knew that she totally ripped, but when she made the trip over to the USA from her home in Australia,  to compete in Exposure Skate - we were blown away. The girl is fast - did you catch the live webcast recently from Bowl-a-Rama? She flew through corners like it was nothing. Sari's progression has been quick and fast, just like her skating, so make sure you keep an eye on this girl to see what she does next!

Who's Rad?       Sari Simpson

Age?      Sixteen

Home is?       Sydney, Australia.

Home park or skate spot?          Bondi Skatepark and the parks around Sydney.

How long have you been skateboarding?

I was about nine when I got a little K-Mart skateboard. I started taking it seriously about four years ago.

What do you enjoy most about skateboarding?

Sunset sessions at Bondi, the park I first learnt to skate. When I'm skating near the beach I feel completely free, not worrying about stopwatches or being judged. That is the time I enjoy it most.

There is also nothing that compares to the feeling of landing a trick when I've worked so hard to get it.

The people I've met- skaters are individual and often creative people, I feel like I can be myself. When my mum and I first moved to the city from the country I didn't know anyone, so I will always feel so grateful I found skateboarding and the supportive community that comes along with it.

Photo Tiffany Williams

Tell us about your board, what brand of deck, wheels, trucks?

I ride a 8.25 with 58 bones wheels and Independent trucks.

Favourite music to skate to?

Beyoncé - I'm sure all the hard core skaters will agree.

Photo Dean Tirkot

Favourite place you've ever skated?

Is too hard to pin it down to one place. Combi Bowl and Venice skatepark are my favourites in California. I love Bondi Bowl because I know it through and through.

I recently went to New Zealand for Bowzilla, Wellington and to meet my NZ family for the first time. I skated a bowl in the South Island at Lake Wanaka, behind the bowl is a view of snow capped mountains and a beautiful lake. That's got to be my favourite as far as scenery goes.

Tell us about some recent contests you have been in?

Most recently, I competed in the Vans Park series at Manly Beach. They built the park on the sand. Every skater approached it creatively in their own unique way. It was a really fun contest as it was in correlation with the Australian Open of surfing so It had a festival feel.

Bowlarama 2017- Bowlarama is a massive comp that happens in Bondi beach every year. A lot of the pros from over seas come to Bondi and it creates an exciting vibe. When I was in primary school my friend and I would try to sneak a day off school just to watch the pros skate in the week leading up to the comp. So it was a dream to actually compete in the first woman's pro division.

After years of being one of the only girls skating Bondi, watching rad visiting female pros draw creative lines and go for gnarly tricks in that bowl really inspired me and has pushed me to progress. I was happy to make the finals.

Photo Dean Tirkot

Favourite trick?

Backside ollies.

Photo Transition Photography

Which female skaters inspire you?

Lizzie Armanto! She has an amazing style, her stale fish airs are killer. She is breaking new ground with her 'Fire' part for Thrasher.

Amelia Brodka, it's admirable that she works hard to run events like Exposure to create opportunities for girls and women.

It's great that there are female skateboarders at a really high level to aspire to. You see them doing a trick and you think, I need to get that trick. Or they do a grind and you want to do a better grind. The female skate scene in Australia is strong but we all live pretty spread out. When the girls come together for contests they inspire and push me to progress.

I also teach a bunch of young girls at Monster Skatepark every week, it's cool to see their confidence growing, the way they go for it like fierce little skate babies is the best.

Photo: Tiffany Williams

We know you shoot often with photographer Tiffany Williams, who's work we love - what is like collaborating with another female on skate projects?

Tiffany first saw me skate when she was shooting some pics at a comp a few years ago. Tiff reached out to me and asked if we could shoot again. I was excited at the opportunity to work with a female photographer for the first time. Tiff is really talented and has a unique and beautiful photography style. I feel very fortunate to be able to collaborate With another girl in such a male dominated industry. Tiffany started collaborating with 'Girl is Not a 4 letter' word to cover the summer contests in Australia this year. It was a great feeling to have a friend like Tiffany around the bowl. It is a very male dominated world in and out of skateboarding but with more women working together and more women involved with the skate industry it can really elevate not just woman's skateboarding but skateboarding as a whole and create a comfortable inviroment for girls who want to try skateboarding. I really love the guys that I skate with, they have become good friends and have encouraged me in my skateboarding but theres nothing like having another girl to create, hang out and joke around with at the skatepark.

How was your trip to the USA?

It was an amazing experience that I feel very grateful for. I went over with some other Australian skater girls through 'iskate Australia' We got to travel around Southern California, hit up all the iconic parks I've dreamt of skating and meet so many rad people. There is nothing like the beauty of Californian sunsets after a long day of skating.

Can you tell us what parks, events etc you hit up while you were here?

Every year I was busting to compete at Exposure, I'd watch all the videos- I finally got to go. Exposure is like a festival of woman's skateboarding... I've never seen so many female skaters in one place, it's so different to home. I learnt so much just by watching everyone. It was cool to be surrounded by so many girls who share the same passion. And... they had the best acai bowls! We hit up a few other parks too like Combi and Venice. I love Venice for its relaxed bowl and Combi because it really challenges you, if you don't stay sharp that bowl will throw you.

We also got the opportunity to skate Tony Hawks private vert ramp. We had no idea he would show up! So it was crazy to be skating vert in a doubles run with Mr Hawk himself.

Any plans to come back and visit us again soon?

It depends on how much money I can save! But I'm hoping to compete at Exposure this year and the Girls Combi next.

Photo Joanne Barratt

What is coming up next?

Skating, spending time with friends and my mum. And working towards the comps coming up.

Any last words for girls out there who want to start skateboarding?

If skating makes you happy then do it without question. I was really shy when I first started going to the skatepark, it can be intimidating at first but eventually, I made friends and the guys helped me out. I think girls have been taught to play it safe and that a sport like skateboarding is too tough. But girls are absolutely capable! It's overcoming your fear that makes skating so special. Don't be afraid to be a beginner or ask for advice, everyone has to start somewhere.

I promise, once you get that first trick you've worked hard for, you're hooked.

Last night was the "It's Not About Pretty" Girls Skate Jam at Kona Skatepark in Florida, put on by our GN4LW ambassador and INAP book designer, Elise Crigar. Hundreds of people showed up to skate, listen to bands, watch mural's being painted, eat, drink and support the girls in the community that love to skateboard.

The most important thing about this night was that girls came from all over to skate with each other - it was an evening where they could find girls just like themselves doing what they love, make connections, and have fun.

We'd like to thank Elise Crigar for all her hard work and vision, Kona Skatepark for believing in this mission and opening their doors to this event, and of course all the musicians, artists, volunteers, food and drink companies who set up shop, skate & surf companies who donated product and everyone who came out to make this an awesome night.
