Hunter Long   /  Photo Ian logan for Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

The Vans Park Series hits in Huntington Beach this week and the women are already deep into practice sessions for what looks like it will be an awesome comp. This is stop 2 on the VPS Tour for the women and  it's kicking off with Women's Prelims this Thursday and Women's Finals on Saturday.

Fourteen-year-old Brigton Zeuner will be defending her VPS Huntington Beach title from last year , Nora Vasconcellos, last years World Champion will be showing everyone why she won in China (great trick combos, use of park and a lot of style!), and a lot of rookies will be giving the old guard a run for their money and trying to make podium. Keep your eye on Sakura Yosozumi, she may be new on the scene, but she just took home a bronze medal at last months X-Games and is definitely one to watch

Under hot and sunny skies in Huntington Beach, CA, the Vans Continental Championships started off with 20 women competing in qualifiers. The field was narrowed to just eight ladies who went on to compete in the finals, and the skating was awesome. Dora Varella was defending her title from last year and did not falter in her quest to win again and take home not only a medal and bragging rights, but an all expense paid trip to the World Championships in Shanghai, China later this year!

Congrats to all the girls who competed today - there was some tough competition!  Shout out to Vans and The Boardr for having us!

The Women Were Ripping During The OG Jam At Venice Skatepark!

The OG Jam women's division did not disappoint! With a cool breeze blowing in off of the ocean, and a nice marine layer to keep things a bit cooler than it has been in Los Angeles, it was the perfect day to skate at Venice Skatepark. The ladies are coming out more and more to compete in the women's division of the OG Jam, and it was really nice to see the awesome friendships that have developed.

These gals we're attacking the pool and wowing the huge crowd that had come out to watch - WCMX rider, Tracie Garacochea, decided to drop into the deep end of the pool, which involves a "free fall" halfway down the wall and is not for the faint of heart,  she pulled it off and people were screaming their heads off.  Amy Bradshaw brought her smooth and stylish skating to each run and was amazing to watch.  Jessie Frietze attacked that pool as if it was her own personal playground and her FS airs were a hit! Meredith Michael was grinding the coping right and left, and Julie Goforth was carving and smiling so much with every run it was the perfect reminder that skateboarding is always FUN, even when competing!

RESULTS:

1st     Jesse Frietze
2nd    Meredith Michael
3rd    Amy Bradshaw

Thanks to everyone at the OG Jam for putting on this rad series of events, big ups to the City of Los Angeles for having this one at Venice Skatepark, and thanks to Heidi Lemmon, the volunteers, the judges, announcers, support crew and sponsors who make this all happen at ecah and every event.

We hope to see you at the next one!
5 Great Books To Grab If You Love Surfing Or Skateboarding.
Street Angel Goes to Juvie by Jim Rugg
Surfgirl Magazine & Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen
Swell by Liz Clark
Herewith
Photos Ian Logan

Summer is a great time to read in between your surf sessions at the beach, or in the warm summer evenings while winding down from that long, hot skate sesh you had earlier in the day. We found some great books (and a couple magazines) you may not know about, but that should be on your radar!

Here are some of our favorite reads:

1. Street Angel Goes to Juvie - another awesome book in the Street Angel series by Jim Rugg & Brian Maruca. If you are not familiar with Street Angel, Jesse "Street Angel" Sanchez, also known as "The Deadliest Girl Alive"  is a homeless skateboarding pre-teen who fights the bad guys in each of her adventures. There are more books in the series and you'll want to read them all.  Jesse is a badass and inspiring to so many girls and women - especailly those who skate.  One of our mini shredder friends, Kala, reads each book the minute she gets her hands on it and then over and over until the next one comes out!  The series is addicting!!  You can get Street Angel Goes to Juvie  HERE

2. Surfgirl Magazine - while not technically a book, it is one of our favorite reads because the entire magazine features women's surfing - it's chock full of travel destinations, interviews with your fav female surfers and articles on anything to do with surfing. And we have to say that the awesome visuals hook us in every time!  You can subscribe HERE but you can usually find a copy at your local Barnes & Noble bookstore too!

3. Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen - Tara is a well known skateboarder, writer, filmer and so much more. Like a Dog is about a scrappy young skateboarder's story of underground worlds and fringe existences, confusing family relationships and the struggle for intimacy. We are huge fans of Tara's so we loved this book! It's paperback and lightweight, so throw it into your beach bag for a read by the waters edge.  It deals with some hard subject matter - so best for teens and above. Get a copy HERE

4. Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening by Liz Clark,- This book is not technically just about surfing, but Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasize about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell, headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon. This book will make you want to start planning your next adventure...  Order a copy HERE or pick it up next time you are at Target or Barnes & Noble.

5. Herewith - is a hybrid - it falls in-between book and magazine for its thick paper stock, saturated imagery, genius layouts, clean design and the ability to make us want more with every issue. Its focus is on surfing but no matter what images and articles they run, it's stunning and a great read. Inspiring and gorgeous to say the least!  You can order it HERE
"Mid 90's" Skate Movie Coming Soon.

While we are still eagerly awaiting THE SKATE KITCHEN movie to drop in August, we have to say that this new film by writer/director, Jonah Hill looks good too!  No female skaters that we can see in the trailer, but a great concept and something every skater can relate to. It's a coming of age story and centers on how a wooden toy can provide much-needed relief, create lasting friendships and spark adventure when you're growing up and going through hard stuff.

In theaters this October.

14 Yr Old Brighton Zeuner Repeats For Gold At X-Games Women's Park!

It was a full on battle throughout all 3 runs for the women competing today in the X-Games Women's Park Finals! Nothing like we have ever seen before from these ladies.

On her first run AU's 13 yr old Sabre Norris took the lead while riding switch for a lot of her run and throwing down a flawless 540 above coping, but last years gold medalist, Brighton Zeuner had her game face on and wasn't having it - she charged ahead to secure her position in first with a jam-packed run with tricks on every wall she hit.

Nicole Hause, the hometown favorite, fell on run one and two but had a great third run much to the excitement of the crowd, but it just wasn't enough to land her on podium, unfortunately. Sakura Yosozumi wasn't even in podium position until her last run, which was flawless and bumped her up into bronze medal position.

Sabre and Brighton battled it out on runs two and three, but after Brighton scored a 90.33 on her second run, Sabre was unable to beat her score and had to settle for a well placed  silver medal - not too shabby for her first X-Games!

The level of skating was higher than we have seen in past years and it was awesome to watch - these ladies had the crowd on their feet!

Huge congrats to Brighton Zeuner who now has (at 14 yrs old) two gold medals back to back in X-Games women's park!

This New Country Music Video Features 10 Female Skateboarders.

The music video for "New Ways to Fail," the new country music video by Sarah Shook & the Disarmers,  has more female skaters in it than another other music video we have ever seen! It's also interesting that you'll see them stop at a skate shop (Uprise Skateshop in Chicago),  grab Leticia Bufoni's new pro model and set up a freshie. Considering the video was sponsored by Plan B, the brand that sponsors Leticia, it all starts making sense once you see the credits roll.

Desira Miller
Jenny Gilley
Sara Reyna
Jessi Woska

Photographer Julie Daniels Gives Us A Peek At The New Dickies Girl Kids Line!
Quinne, Kala, & Jaelyn   /  all photos by Julie Daniels

We some rad photos of three young skater girls on instagram - all wearing Dickies clothing in kids sizes and wondered what was up? Because up until now, Dickies hasn't made clothing in young girls sizes (it has been traditionally a size 0-15 junior brand) and yet Dickies is a fan favorite for girls of all ages that skate, so we wondered when it might happen... We tracked down photographer Julie Daniels to give us the scoop on what the new kids line is like, when it launches, how the shoot went and to talk about the three mini shredders who got to "test skate" the new Dickies looks!

Hi Julie! We are so stoked to get to do this interview with you - we have been fans of your work for quite a few years and this shoot with Dickies kids clothing really caught our eye! We want to know everything! But first, can you tell us how long have you been working as a professional photographer?

My dad was an avid amateur, he built a darkroom in our garage, so I was always into it, but seven years ago I quit my job as a publicist and went to photo school and the hobby caught fire.

How did you get into skateboard photography?

I’m more of a fashion photographer, but skaters have a unique way of expressing themselves, not just through skating, but the way they dress too, they use their whole body to make a statement, and it’s pure poetry. Skateboarding and photography have a long history of going together, it seemed natural to combine them.

You recently did an awesome shoot featuring young skater girls and Dickies - can you tell us how that came about?

Dickies Girl reached out because my daughter is a skater, and they are bringing out some really cool styles for little girls, so I put together a little crew of girls to skate around in them and try them out.

How did you select the girls and the location for this particular project and can you tell us who they are?

I wanted to photograph girls who are already bringing it in personal style, even though they are pretty young (9 and 10 years old). We’ve been skating with Kala (@kalask8grl) about a year now, and she’s always lots of fun. The first time I saw her skate, she was trying to launch off a wall over and over again, and she kept falling and getting back up to try again, blinking back tears. I loved her tenacity. Jaelyn (@jroseskates) is a really strong skater who we’d seen at a couple events, we didn’t know her that well, but she was always smiling and bringing new tricks, and she wears a lot of purple, which is so cool. I was stoked when her dad said she was available, because I knew she’d be perfect for the shoot. My daughter Quinne (@quinneforreal) is kind of a goofball, she’s always up for anything that involves wheels, fashion, and cameras. I gave up trying to dress her a long time ago, I just let her do her own thing. She loves skating in Dickies because the pockets are long and actually hold more than a key or a chapstick, but up until now, we’ve had to buy them in the boy’s section.

I chose Monitor skatepark in Watts because it’s such a beautiful location, right next to a park and a colorful play area. The transitions are mellow, but fun, so I knew it would be easy to focus on the clothing. Plus, I have never seen it busy, and I wanted us to have freedom to move around.

Can you share a bit about how the day went?

About ten minutes into the shoot, while Jaelyn was getting her hair braided, her skateboard went missing. We couldn’t find it anywhere, which was puzzling, because the park had been empty except for a dad holding a baby in one arm and teaching his toddler son how to skate over in the halfpipe. I felt bad, because I know kids work hard to build their boards exactly how they want them, and they can’t just drive to the store and drop a bunch of $$ to replace everything. Just when her dad went to his car to get his own board so she could use it for the shoot, somebody noticed that the toddler in the halfpipe was skating on HER board! He’d seen it sitting around, picked it up, and skated off on it! This was a reminder to me to try to always have some of our old used boards in the trunk so we can donate them on the spot to a kid who’s really enthused to learn.

Why do you feel that strong images of young girls skateboarding are important to have out there?

The perception that skateboarding is a boys activity should have never happened, and needs to be a thing of the past. Females are bringing a lot of excitement to skateboarding, and every time a girl is seen ripping around a skatepark, it’s like an open invitation to other girls to go ahead and try it. It’s also important for the boys to see positive images of girl skaters, so they’ll be less surprised when it happens at their home park. For the most part, we’ve come across really supportive guys, but occasionally less advanced skater boys will make weird comments about my daughter, like they’re literally dumbfounded that “a girl” could be better than them. They obviously haven’t seen enough images of girls skateboarding yet!

What has been the reaction to the images so far?

So far everybody who has seen the photos wants to know where and when the clothes can be purchased.

You shoot a mix of action and portrait images - do you work with each skater one at a time to capture the action shots?

I wanted each girl to have a moment of their own, so I asked them what tricks they felt comfortable doing at this park and then set up camp to capture it. Jaelyn brought a whole bag of tricks, and ended up inspiring Kala to try some new stuff. It was a fun challenge, everything has to come together, obviously the trick, but also the focus, the background, the way the clothing looks, etc. I was really happy with the results, and I hope the girls are too.

Favorite moment from the shoot day?

We shot the clothes one way in the skatepark, then we let the girls restyle their outfit and go into the play area. It was fun watching what accessories they chose, and how they incorporated skateboarding into the other areas of the park. My favorite moment was when they all skated down a green hill in the playground that is made of some sort of foam rubber, so it’s slower than a normal ramp. They were racing each other and shrieking in excitement. It was really fun.

What's next?

I’m shooting another brand this week in a similar way (portrait and action together) but on roller skates. Then I’m going to Catalina to shoot an athleisure brand, on a boat with a 2 story slide, so I think I’m going to have to shoot it from a jet ski to get the right perspective. Wish me luck!

A Pro Female Skater Gets Her Own Signature Shoe!

 all images via Adidas

Pro skateboarder Nora Vasconcellos is flying high! Today marks the launch of her first signature Adidas shoe!  This shoe is pure Nora - a customized take on the classic Adidas Matchcourt RX. As everyone knows, Nora is often seen wearing lavender/purple at contests and in skate videos, so this shoe fits right in! It has a really rad floral design on the heel tab, designed by Nora herself (of course).

The shoe’s upper is constructed with a mix of canvas and suede, fading from a light purple on the toebox to a slightly darker purple on the midfoot and heel, where the embroidery provides a bold pop of style. A white three stripes graphic and white midsole provide contrast, and further details arrive via the customized tongue and heel patches, a gold “Nora” foil stamp, and white insoles with whimsical orange and teal patterns.

The new Adidas NORA sneaker is available in unisex sizes on adidas.com starting today, July 7th, and retails for $75 USD.
