Today's podium at Vans Park Series Huntington Beach Women's Finals was a bit different than what we saw in the semi-finals. All the women skated hard but in the end, Kisa Nakamura took 1st, with Jordyn Barrat landing in 2nd and Brighton Zeuner in 3rd. Bryce Wettstein couldn't quite hold onto that first place position she had in the quarter finals and semi-finals and took home 4th.

Bryce is fairly new to the women's pro tour&nbsp, and it has been awesome to watch her evolve - she is someone to keep an eye on for sure! Her tricks are varied, she has more speed than she had in past years and her runs are dialed in. She has become a seasoned competitor.

Congrats to all the women for a great comp!

The Vans Park Series Women's Division in Huntington Beach was going off today! Qualifiers were crazy good and had 18 women competing, and by the time the semifinals rolled around and the 8 Select Pro's joined the top 12 from the qualifiers, things really got heated.

At the end of the day 14-year-old, Bryce Wettstein, came out in 1st place heading into Saturday's finals. That is a pretty nice place to be sitting. Bryce has been absolutely killing it lately at comps and it was great to see her throw down some really nice runs.  Sakura from Japan held strong in 2nd place, with Kisa Nakamura taking 3rd and Lizzie Armanto, Brighton Zeuner, Poppy Starr Olsen, Nora Vasconcellos and Jordyn Barratt rounding out the 8 women who will compete in the finals on Sunday. Trust us - this will be a women's final you won't want to miss!

Last years champion, Brighton Zeuner, will be working hard to defend her title, with 2017 World Champion Nora Vasconcellos hot on her heels, and Jordyn Barratt is always a threat when the pressure is on.  To be honest, any of the women in the top 8 could end up on podium Saturday, it's a really strong field of skaters!

OG Skater Judi Oyama In New Video By CrossFit.

\We are super stoked to see our friend, Judi Oyama, aka "Badass Skate Mom" profiled in this new video for CrossFit!  We competed with Judi back in the day and love her to death! With her positive vibe and her "take no shit" attitude, she is an inspiration to all ages and both men and women.

Judi was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame this past year and is still shredding her local skatepark as well as racing slalom and nabbing world titles in the process. As you will see in this video, Judi doesn't just skateboard, she is also heavily involved in CrossFit and credits the discipline to keep her fit & strong  - all at the age of 58 years young!

Check out this awesome video and get a glimpse into what it's like to be a Badass Skate Mom!

The Vans Park Series hits in Huntington Beach this week and the women are already deep into practice sessions for what looks like it will be an awesome comp. This is stop 2 on the VPS Tour for the women and  it's kicking off with Women's Prelims this Thursday and Women's Finals on Saturday.

Fourteen-year-old Brigton Zeuner will be defending her VPS Huntington Beach title from last year , Nora Vasconcellos, last years World Champion will be showing everyone why she won in China (great trick combos, use of park and a lot of style!), and a lot of rookies will be giving the old guard a run for their money and trying to make podium. Keep your eye on Sakura Yosozumi, she may be new on the scene, but she just took home a bronze medal at last months X-Games and is definitely one to watch

Under hot and sunny skies in Huntington Beach, CA, the Vans Continental Championships started off with 20 women competing in qualifiers. The field was narrowed to just eight ladies who went on to compete in the finals, and the skating was awesome. Dora Varella was defending her title from last year and did not falter in her quest to win again and take home not only a medal and bragging rights, but an all expense paid trip to the World Championships in Shanghai, China later this year!

Congrats to all the girls who competed today - there was some tough competition!  Shout out to Vans and The Boardr for having us!

The OG Jam women's division did not disappoint! With a cool breeze blowing in off of the ocean, and a nice marine layer to keep things a bit cooler than it has been in Los Angeles, it was the perfect day to skate at Venice Skatepark. The ladies are coming out more and more to compete in the women's division of the OG Jam, and it was really nice to see the awesome friendships that have developed.

These gals we're attacking the pool and wowing the huge crowd that had come out to watch - WCMX rider, Tracie Garacochea, decided to drop into the deep end of the pool, which involves a "free fall" halfway down the wall and is not for the faint of heart,  she pulled it off and people were screaming their heads off.  Amy Bradshaw brought her smooth and stylish skating to each run and was amazing to watch.  Jessie Frietze attacked that pool as if it was her own personal playground and her FS airs were a hit! Meredith Michael was grinding the coping right and left, and Julie Goforth was carving and smiling so much with every run it was the perfect reminder that skateboarding is always FUN, even when competing!

RESULTS:

1st     Jesse Frietze
2nd    Meredith Michael
3rd    Amy Bradshaw

Thanks to everyone at the OG Jam for putting on this rad series of events, big ups to the City of Los Angeles for having this one at Venice Skatepark, and thanks to Heidi Lemmon, the volunteers, the judges, announcers, support crew and sponsors who make this all happen at ecah and every event.

We hope to see you at the next one!
5 Great Books To Grab If You Love Surfing Or Skateboarding.
Street Angel Goes to Juvie by Jim Rugg
Surfgirl Magazine & Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen
Swell by Liz Clark
Herewith
Photos Ian Logan

Summer is a great time to read in between your surf sessions at the beach, or in the warm summer evenings while winding down from that long, hot skate sesh you had earlier in the day. We found some great books (and a couple magazines) you may not know about, but that should be on your radar!

Here are some of our favorite reads:

1. Street Angel Goes to Juvie - another awesome book in the Street Angel series by Jim Rugg & Brian Maruca. If you are not familiar with Street Angel, Jesse "Street Angel" Sanchez, also known as "The Deadliest Girl Alive"  is a homeless skateboarding pre-teen who fights the bad guys in each of her adventures. There are more books in the series and you'll want to read them all.  Jesse is a badass and inspiring to so many girls and women - especailly those who skate.  One of our mini shredder friends, Kala, reads each book the minute she gets her hands on it and then over and over until the next one comes out!  The series is addicting!!  You can get Street Angel Goes to Juvie  HERE

2. Surfgirl Magazine - while not technically a book, it is one of our favorite reads because the entire magazine features women's surfing - it's chock full of travel destinations, interviews with your fav female surfers and articles on anything to do with surfing. And we have to say that the awesome visuals hook us in every time!  You can subscribe HERE but you can usually find a copy at your local Barnes & Noble bookstore too!

3. Like a Dog by Tara Jepsen - Tara is a well known skateboarder, writer, filmer and so much more. Like a Dog is about a scrappy young skateboarder's story of underground worlds and fringe existences, confusing family relationships and the struggle for intimacy. We are huge fans of Tara's so we loved this book! It's paperback and lightweight, so throw it into your beach bag for a read by the waters edge.  It deals with some hard subject matter - so best for teens and above. Get a copy HERE

4. Swell: A Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening by Liz Clark,- This book is not technically just about surfing, but Captain Liz Clark spent her youth dreaming of traveling the world by sailboat and surfing remote waves. When she was 22, she met a mentor who helped turn her desire into reality. Embarking on an adventure that most only fantasize about, she set sail from Santa Barbara, California, as captain of her 40-foot sailboat, Swell, headed south in search of surf, self, and the wonder and learning that lies beyond the unbroken horizon. This book will make you want to start planning your next adventure...  Order a copy HERE or pick it up next time you are at Target or Barnes & Noble.

5. Herewith - is a hybrid - it falls in-between book and magazine for its thick paper stock, saturated imagery, genius layouts, clean design and the ability to make us want more with every issue. Its focus is on surfing but no matter what images and articles they run, it's stunning and a great read. Inspiring and gorgeous to say the least!  You can order it HERE
"Mid 90's" Skate Movie Coming Soon.

While we are still eagerly awaiting THE SKATE KITCHEN movie to drop in August, we have to say that this new film by writer/director, Jonah Hill looks good too!  No female skaters that we can see in the trailer, but a great concept and something every skater can relate to. It's a coming of age story and centers on how a wooden toy can provide much-needed relief, create lasting friendships and spark adventure when you're growing up and going through hard stuff.

In theaters this October.

14 Yr Old Brighton Zeuner Repeats For Gold At X-Games Women's Park!

It was a full on battle throughout all 3 runs for the women competing today in the X-Games Women's Park Finals! Nothing like we have ever seen before from these ladies.

On her first run AU's 13 yr old Sabre Norris took the lead while riding switch for a lot of her run and throwing down a flawless 540 above coping, but last years gold medalist, Brighton Zeuner had her game face on and wasn't having it - she charged ahead to secure her position in first with a jam-packed run with tricks on every wall she hit.

Nicole Hause, the hometown favorite, fell on run one and two but had a great third run much to the excitement of the crowd, but it just wasn't enough to land her on podium, unfortunately. Sakura Yosozumi wasn't even in podium position until her last run, which was flawless and bumped her up into bronze medal position.

Sabre and Brighton battled it out on runs two and three, but after Brighton scored a 90.33 on her second run, Sabre was unable to beat her score and had to settle for a well placed  silver medal - not too shabby for her first X-Games!

The level of skating was higher than we have seen in past years and it was awesome to watch - these ladies had the crowd on their feet!

Huge congrats to Brighton Zeuner who now has (at 14 yrs old) two gold medals back to back in X-Games women's park!
