If you aren't a female skater or perhaps a parent of one, you may not know this.
Jeff Grosso who at times came off so core that you weren't sure what he'd say next, was also a big softie. Grosso was always supporting girls and women in skateboarding, whether it was encouraging words at a contest, having top female pro's on his show "Love Letters to Skateboarding", or some behind the scenes moments that most never knew about, Grosso was making sure women got their due.
Grosso passed away this week, and for a moment it seemed like the skateboarding world was so shocked they were silent, when reality finally hit, the posts started coming, with everyone having a special memory of this larger than life man who knew just about every female skater, pro to AM.
Lizzie with Grosso on "Grosso's Love Letters to Skateboarding"
Some of those female skaters have been leaving their memories and sentiments on Instagram in recent days, showing just how much he meant to the skate community.
Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word founder, Cindy Whitehead, remembers her first encounter with Grosso:
"It was at Exposure Skate contest at Poods Park. I was talking to another male '80s skater who Grosso was not too fond of. After I walked away from that conversation, a young boy walked over to me and said: "Grosso wants to talk to you". Uh oh, I thought, here it comes. Jeff was holding court sitting on top of a picnic table with quite a few people around him, I steadied myself for what I was sure was a confrontation. Instead, he said "Hey, Lizzie (Armanto) says that shirt the photographer is wearing is one of your shirts and I fucking love it! Can I get one? It was the tee-shirt we sell that says "Girls, Whiskey, Rock & Roll Skateboarding" I almost fell backward because this is not at all what I was expecting. At that moment I realized, that while he liked the shirt, his intention was to support the girls."
And that's what was so great about Jeff, he was never what you were expecting.
RIP Grosso, you will be missed.

The World’s Best Male and Female Skaters to Compete in Park and Street Events
Carlsbad, Calif. (March 30, 2020) -- The Adventure Sports Network (ASN) and MTN DEWⓇ announced today that its annual summer Dew Tour skateboard competition and festival will now take place September 10-13 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, Calif., the event’s home for its fifth consecutive year.
The event, originally planned for May 7-10 in Long Beach, was scheduled to be the last official global Olympic qualifying event in the U.S. for men’s and women’s skateboarding park and street competitions. Dew Tour also served as the first qualifying event in 2019. As the Tokyo Olympics are postponed to 2021, World Skate, as the sport's governing body, is working to provide an update on the status of skateboarding's suspended Olympic qualification system.

“Our primary focus is still to ensure the safety and health of our athletes, fans, partners and staff,” said Courtney Gresik, Vice President and General Manager of Dew Tour. “The Dew Tour will return to Long Beach September 10-13 and it will continue to be a four-day event with world-class competition and a festival. Of course, we will continue to monitor the developments around COVID-19. As we know, the landscape is changing daily and safety is paramount to everything we do.”
In addition to the pro men’s and women’s skateboard competitions, Dew Tour is a celebration of skateboarding competition, culture and creators. The multi-day event also includes a vibrant interactive sponsor village, the Dew Tour festival, live music, local food and beverage vendors and lifestyle activities including a public skate park. Ok, we know, you can't go to the skatepark and it sucks. But doing your part to keep the Covid-19 virus from spreading is the right thing to do. And guess what? No one else with any brains is out there skating in public right now so you aren't the only one who feels like they are grounded.
So in appreciation of you #stayinghome, we've rounded up some ways you can keep your skate stoke going - even while under quarantine.
We will be releasing a new idea each day (Monday - Friday) so you can stay motivated and feel connected to skateboarding, even if you can't be with your friends right now.
We're starting this week off with EXPOSURE SKATE
Our fave girls over at @exposureskate are asking you to DM them your videos of home entertainment on your skateboard. Even if you don't have one to send, some of the videos they have been sharing on Instagram will motivate you to find a way to skate at home!
This one from Amanda (@destroyedbrains) is our favorite!!
Minna and Vernon ~ Photo via Vernon Glenn |
Team rider, Minna Stess, was interviewed by two-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter, Vernon Glenn on CBS News on Friday night. Minna spoke about, why it's important to stay home during the Coranvirus, and how she is keeping in shape as we head towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - which will now be held in 2021.
Thirteen-year-old Minna is on the USA National Women's Park Skateboarding Team and was one of the athletes that voted to postpone the games due to Covid-19.
Nice to see this positive news piece with Minna encouraging people to #stayhome.

Some good news coming from the IOC last night. Sports that have already had their Olympic trials and named their teams, those athletes will keep their spots as the Tokyo Olympics move to 2021.
"The 33 federations governing each sport reached an agreement with the International Olympic Committee to honor all previous qualifications when the Games finally take place".
(info via The Los Angeles Times)
This doesn't mean much for skateboarding as Olympic Trials never got off the ground due to Covid-19. But it does settle the issue that everyone was wondering about for sports like surfing.
So it looks like we will see Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks representing the USA in surfing in 2021!
Well, it's official, the IOC has agreed that it is best to postpone the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for one year. As fas as a date, all we know right now is that it will be held in Japan sometime before end of summer 2021. Most agree, that for the health of the athletes and everyone else, this is the best bet right now while the coronavirus is running rampant across the world.
Host country Japan, and the IOC have also determined that they will still be called the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - even though they will be held in 2021. This is the first time in history that the Olympic Games have been moved like this. Back in 1916, 1940 and 1944, the Olympic Games were canceled because of war.
Qualifiers - Skateboarding has yet to have its qualifiers. At first, some qualifiers were postponed, some were canceled and no one really knew how this would all work out... So this postponement of the Olympics by one year is good news for skateboarders worrying about all that. One less pressure to think/worry about.
The tricky news is, that sometimes athletes peak. Sometimes you have a good year, sometimes you don't. Skateboarders who were in the top five or six in points this past year may not be on the podium when we return to regular competition. There may also be younger skateboarders coming up that now could potentially qualify next year.
It's like we are starting all over from square one in some ways. It's anyone's guess what type of shake-ups we may see moving forward.
Surfing may have an even harder time because they already had their qualifiers. Carissa Moore and Caroline Marks have already been announced, and celebrated, as the two women who have earned their spots on the 2020 USA Olympic team.
What happens now? Do they keep their spots or does the WSL start the clock all over again and the women (and men) have to again pre-qualify?
These are all questions that we will eventually find out the answers to as we move along, but in the meantime, please #stayhome and stay safe!
DEW TOUR’S SKATEBOARD COMPETITION AND FESTIVAL POSTPONED
Olympic Qualifying Event Originally Scheduled from May 7-10 in Long Beach, Calif.
Carlsbad, Calif. (March 20, 2020) -- The Adventure Sports Network (ASN) and MTN DEWⓇ announced today that its annual summer Dew Tour skateboard competition and festival, which is scheduled to serve as a skateboard Olympic qualifying event, is postponed in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Dew Tour served as an Olympic qualifying event for men’s and women’s skateboard street and park last June. It was set to serve as the last Olympic qualifying event in the US before the Tokyo Games May 7-10 in Long Beach, Calif.
Dew Tour's dedication to the overall safety of the event, the current government restrictions on large gatherings, as well as international travel bans, preclude the event from taking place in May.
“We remain committed to the progression of skateboarding as well as serving as a qualifier for skateboarding’s Olympic debut,” explained Courtney Gresik, Dew Tour vice president and general manager. “With the evolving situation of the coronavirus, the safety of our athletes, fans, partners, vendors and staff remains paramount.”
A new date for the event will be set and released soon.

March is Women's History Month and Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word is planning on celebrating and honoring it in a HUGE way!
In 2019, during Women's History Month, the GN4LW movement put up two billboards in Times Square, NY to celebrate & highlight girls skateboarding - something that had never been done before - and created large scale awareness for girls in skateboarding in a big way.
Featured on Girl Are Awesome |
This year Cindy and her Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word movement have even bigger plans...
"We are announcing today that we are infusing $15,000 into women's skateboarding in 2020 because we still see that there is a need for more money to help these girls and women get where they need to go - even at the pro level," says Cindy Whitehead, '70s pro vert skateboarder and founder of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word.

March 2020 starts with GN4LW's financial donation to three very talented pro female skateboarders who are on the 2020 USA National Women's Park Team - Minna Stess, Jordan Santana and Arianna Carmona - to help with their travel to Olympic qualifiers.
Whitehead went on to say, "I hope that if a movement like ours can step up and do something like this, it will encourage larger companies to do the same, if not more. Women's History Month is a great time to announce this and to encourage others to join us in supporting these amazing skateboarders."
