2021 Dew Tour Street Skateboarding Course Preview

This year, Dew Tour utilizes a pre-existing cement skatepark that’s been in the works thanks to a passionate local skate scene for over the past decade. The Lauridsen street course designed by California Skateparks made the park with professional-level features to host Olympic-level competitions and accommodate amateur-level skateboarders.

The street details are as follows:

  • Ten ledges that include straight, out, banked, hubba, and down ledges
  • 11 rails that feature flat, down, round, and square options
  • Four different stair sets
  • A plethora of banks, gaps, hips, and endless lines

For the Dew Tour competition coming in May, the course will showcase a few additional course features that will showcase the skaters’ abilities, as well as up the level of difficulty.

They include:

  • A pallet of MTN Dew over the Euro gap
  • Raised platform to expand the existing stair set into an 11-stair set

2021 Dew Tour Park Skateboarding Course Preview

The folks at California Skateparks hooked up Lauridsen with a heavy bowl designed for intermediate-level skateboarders. The bowl features transitions that can accommodate the advanced skaters as they hone in on their tricks, as well as those looking to progress their skill level.

The park terrain details include:

  • Depth range from 4-8 feet
  • Hips, extensions, spine, pump bump, layback walls
  • Pipe and pool coping

Teen in Rural India Follows Her Dream in New Netflix Film, Skater Girl.

We are so excited about this film being released, we were lucky enough to be in meetings and hear about it in its conception and just knew it was going to be awesome. Big thanks to Manjari & Emmanuel, and of course Hedi Lemmon, for including us early on.

In the inspiring feature film Skater Girl, a teen in rural India must fight against all odds to follow her dreams of becoming a skater and competing in the national championship.

Releasing on Globally Netflix June 11, 2021.

Skater Girl is a coming-of-age story about confidence, courage, and the profound impact of blazing your own trail. Set in a remote village in Rajasthan, India, the film follows Prerna (Rachel Saanchita Gupta in her debut performance), a local teen living a life bound by tradition and duty to her parents. But when London-bred advertising executive Jessica (Amy Maghera) arrives in the village to learn more about her late father's childhood, Prerna and the other local children are introduced to an exciting new adventure thanks to Jessica and her old friend (Jonathan Readwin) who cruises into town on a skateboard.

The kids become infatuated with the sport, skating through the village, disrupting everything and everyone around them. Determined to empower and encourage their newfound passion, Jessica sets out on an uphill battle to build the kids their own skatepark, leaving Prerna with a difficult choice between conforming to society's expectations of her or living out her dream of competing in the National Skateboarding Championships.

Written, Directed and Produced by Manjari Makijany. Starring Rachel Saanchita Gupta, Amy Maghera, Shafin Patel, Jonathan Readwin with special appearance by Waheeda Rehman.

Produced by Emmanuel Pappas and Co-written and Produced by Vinati Makijany.

Jordyn, Part Two | Presented by Toyota USA

Team Toyota athlete Jordyn Barratt grew up in Hawaii skating at Banzai Skatepark. There weren’t any other little girls skating at the park when Jordyn first began. At around 14 years old, Jordyn moved to California and realized there were more skaters just like her. But as she started to compete against some of the girls, she looked up to the competition grew fierce. Gnarly.

Some of the older girls were pretty mean, an experience that Jordyn vowed to change for the future girls of skating. It’s not like that anymore, according to Jordyn, partially due to the expanded contest circuit, which has allowed a little more room for everyone to grow. She knows what it’s like to get picked on, so she’s made it a point to make any girls who are coming up feel welcome—the more, the merrier, in her opinion.

Follow along on her journey in “Jordyn,” a two-part series presented by Toyota USA.

How To Help India And the Skaters Who Call it Home.

Video: Thanks to a German activist and author, skateboarding is slowly changing the children in this Madhya Pradesh village divided by caste.

As many of you know there is a huge outbreak of COVID happening in India and we've been wondering how Janwar Village and other places (and people we know there) have been doing.

We received this email from our friend Ulrike from Rural Game Changers regarding Janwar Village where there is a skatepark the girls go to along with their schooling.

Unfortunately, the info is not great.

But there are ways to help - we are including some links to vetted organizations that are helping NOW to make a difference and save lives. Please think about donating if you can - no amount is too small. 💕

Links to donate can be found HERE

Dear All,

I keep getting inquiries about how things are going in Janwaar. That's why I'm writing to everyone now.

Yes, Covid has arrived in Janwaar - we now have five confirmed cases, young and old people. All five are either from the higher caste or are village headmen (Sarpanch), so unlike our kids, they have been tested. Anil and Arun were sent back home by both, the police and the clinic staff, untested of course. That's how it is in India. Even in the big cities.

I assume that there are considerably more people positive. In Panna, the next biggest city, 40% of those tested are positive. There is no reason to believe that it is better in Janwaar – because some of the villagers still go to Panna regularly.

Even the "golden rules” of social distancing, wearing masks and washing your hands are only partially followed; we have told our kids to wear two masks. One N95 mask, and one cotton mask above. No other better masks are available. We have bought enough masks, not all people are wearing them; despite constant reminders. Also, the housing situation in the villages is not such that keeping distance is even possible. Often 4-7 people share one room to sleep in.

The situation in the government hospital is similar to the pictures we see every day from Delhi: overcrowded rooms, no oxygen (we donated 10 cylinders 10 days ago; the good news is, they have arrived at the hospital; the bad news is, they are already used up!), very few staff, hardly any medicines and even fewer essential medical equipment. A unique tragedy. People are not dying from Covid, but from the lack of infrastructure at all levels.

This coupled with the ignorance and lack of knowledge of the people - it is really very difficult to imagine a way out at the moment. It has to be lived through. We can only watch who will make it to the other side and hope that there are as many as possible.

Despite everything, the villagers are not getting vaccinated! So far about 20 people have been vaccinated, we could not convince more. They believe the Covid vaccination is a government strategy to kill the poorest of the poor in India. The government has now even linked the distribution of subsidized food to vaccination, yet, people are not getting vaccinated. They prefer to go without the food. But it must also be said that for the past one week, there has been NO vaccination in Panna, because there is no vaccine available. So here the government is once again punishing its people twice!

Thanks to friends in Delhi, we have two consultation hotlines of doctors who are available to advise the villagers in case of need – but the villagers have to accept it. Only three consultations have been carried out, which is not much. I assume that this counseling is better than what is available in Panna.

That's how it looks. Grim.

Unfortunately, I cannot paint a better picture - trust me, I would love to.

We’ll talk soon - hopefully with better news!

Best, u*

Dew Tour - Jordyn, Part One | Presented by Toyota USA.

Dew Tour starts next week and we can't wait to watch the ladies shine!

In the meantime, watch part one of this two part series on USA National Team Women's Park skater, Jordyn Barratt!

Growing up on the North Shore of O’ahu, Team Toyota athlete Jordyn Barratt was naturally drawn to surfing, but she found an even stronger passion for skateboarding. Drawing inspiration from ‘80’s skate style, and the skaters who lived it, Jordyn finds herself recreating those tricks from the videos she’d watched until the VHS tape was worn out. Now, as a part of Team USA, she’s training harder than ever but still keeping her focus on the most important aspect of skating: having fun.

Follow along on her journey in “Jordyn,” a two-part series presented by Toyota USA.

"North Hollywood" a New Mainstream Skateboarding Movie Drops Soon!

 For Mature Audiences

The new film "North Hollywood" drops May 24th on VOD.  It stars Ryder McLaughlin, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud, Nico Hiraga, Aramis Hudson, and Vince Vaughn.

While we don't see any female skaters in the trailer, we are hoping that the story line does have some here and there thorough out the film. The story's premise is that Michael (played by Ryder McLaughlin) can't decide if he should go to college, get a job, or or pursue his dream to be a pro skater.

You may recognize Nico Hiraga as another actor/skater in the film, you've seen him in "Book Smart", "Moxie" and even "The Skate Kitchen".

You'll also catch Thrasher's 2018 Skater of the Year, Tyshawn Jones in this movie.

You can watch "North Hollywood" on VOD starting May 24th, so grab the popcorn and your (vaccinated) friends for a fun movie night!

Results for The USA Skateboarding Nationals!

After a long video submission lead up (open division, quarter-finals, and semi-finals) - due to COVID - the final 8 women in both street and park met up in person (with all proper protocols in place) to battle it out for podium positions at the USA Skateboarding Nationals. This contest awarded points to each USA athlete as we head into Olympic Qualifiers.

Street took place at The Berrics and Park was at California Training facility this past weekend.

Congrats to all the ladies who skated hard and showed the world that they were training like crazy this past year, despite the Pandemic!

Vista, Calif. (May 11, 2021) — Together with Toyota, The Berrics, and CA Training Facility, USA Skateboarding - the governing body for skateboarding in the United States - created a new contest format combining both video submissions and an in-person finals round. USA Skateboarding developed a virtual national championships event format to allow skateboarders to earn Olympic Qualifying points at the national championships while minimizing the risks of hosting an event and gathering in large groups during the pandemic. The National Championships were open to all athletes who met the eligibility requirements of USA Skateboarding competing in Men’s and Women’s Park and Men’s and Women’s Street.

“Our Covid-19 Mitigation Plan gave us a level of comfort that we could deliver on our number one priority with the national championships – keeping our athletes and staff safe while hosting four Olympic Qualifying points-earning events in two separate venues,” said Josh Friedberg, USA Skateboarding, CEO. “The outcome went well beyond our expectations – it was heartwarming to see everyone together again for the first time since November of 2019 and the skateboarding was incredible. Huge congrats to our repeat Street National Champions Mariah Duran and Dashawn Jordan, and our new Park National Champions Minna Stess and Jagger Eaton.”

USA Skateboarding national team member and National Street Champion, Dashawn Jordan: "When USA Skateboarding announced the finals were in person, I was stoked knowing I was going to be able to interact and vibe with other skaters in a contest environment again. It had been too long, and when you got dope energy around you while competing, it makes it that much better. My mindset heading into these next three qualifying contests is to skate my hardest and have fun because no matter the result, I can't get mad knowing I gave it my all."

Vans Launches a Collection with Breana Geering.

Breana Geering ~ Photo Acosta for Vans

Costa Mesa, CALIF. (May 4, 2021) – Vans, the original action sports brand and icon of creative expression, has teamed up with Breana Geering, one of the most talented skateboarders coming out of Canada’s of-the-moment skate scene, on a head-to-toe pack led by the Skate Old Skool.

Hailing from British Columbia, Breana has emerged as an influential force in skateboarding, gaining recognition for her calm, collected style, serious ledge skills, and flip in and flip out manual tricks. Recently, Vans Skateboarding talked to Breana and those closest to her about how she came up in the Vancouver skate scene and what’s shaped her journey along the way. Building on the momentum of the past few years, Vans and Breana came together this season to create a forward approach to footwear and apparel, combining wearable colors with a nod to gender neutrality.

Breana approached the collection by leveraging the timeless appeal of Vans Classics combined with subtle touches that showcase her personality: “I wanted it to be special and personal. I really made it my own by adding in some of my own little doodles to the back of the shoe and the insole. I really wanted to make a nice, simple shoe that people would be stoked to wear, to skate or to the bar.”

With port uppers and a black outsole, laces and Sidestripe, the Skate Old Skool by Breana Geering delivers a refined look with elevated details, such as debossed faux snakeskin on the quarters. Her doodles on the heel illustrate the creative spirit Breana has infused into the shoe.

Next up in the collection, the Skate Era takes on classy vibes with a bit of edge. Marshmallow uppers are contrasted with a black sole, black laces, and the same debossed snakeskin quarters found on the Skate Old Skool. Final touches include brushed gold eyelets and a Checkerboard woven patch.

A similar wearable approach and color palette carries over into Breana’s apparel collection, designed to ensure that she can skate and move while wearing each piece.

The Breana Tour Tank is grey, rib knit with Vans custom logo on the front and her signature doodle on the back. Pair the Tour Tank with her Authentic Plaid Pant, a Sturdy Stretch chino with an expressive-yet-subtle black allover plaid print and slash/back welt pockets. Pull on the Breana jacket, a black cotton canvas relaxed fit jacket with patch/welt pockets and a doodle graphic on the chest pocket—a piece that epitomizes Breana’s laid-back cool.

Completing the look is the Breana Bucket Hat and Tote, tying together the snakeskin and doodle elements from the rest of the collection. The black bucket hat features a doodle patch on the front and reverses to a port snakeskin print with Vans logo. The black poly tote features a printed Checkerboard bottom, drop-in zip entry, front zip pocket with doodle patch, interior laptop sleeve, and interior printed snakeskin lining.

Breana Geering turned heads in 2018, winning first place in the Advanced category at Vancouver’s annual Stop, Drop and Roll women’s’ skate contest, and third place at the Montreal-based EMPIRE Am Getting Paid competition. That same year, she released her first solo parts in Thrasher’s Wisteria and Girl Skateboards’ Out For A Rip. In 2019, she made Thrasher’s Scramble list, a testament to her talent on the board, and followed that up recently with a full part in the 2020 all-female Vans Skateboarding film Credits. Her latest collection with Vans embodies her creative spirit and passionate drive to keep pushing skateboarding forward.

The Vans Breana Geering pack is now available at Vans retailers and Vans.com/Skateboarding.

The Book About Skateboarding You Should Be Reading .

We all love Vans, but how much do you really know about the founder and how the company came to be?

It doesn't matter if you're a skater or interested in business, this new memoir from Vans Founder, Paul Van Doren, is a must read. And if you like listening to your books - you're in for a real treat - Tony Alva narrates the audio version.

In the tradition of bestsellers such as Shoe Dog, Authentic is a surprisingly candid, compelling memoir by a high school dropout who went on to establish one of the world's most iconic brands.

You may not know their creator, but you certainly know the shoes: for more than a generation, Vans shoes have been synonymous with cool.

Now in this refreshingly candid memoir, meet Paul Van Doren, the charismatic founder of Vans—the shoe company beloved by skateboarders, creatives, and fans everywhere for its laid-back, colorful SoCal vibe, and famous for its people-oriented company culture.

In Authentic, he shares his unlikely journey from high-school dropout to sneaker-industry legend. A blue-collar kid with no higher education and zero retail experience, Van Doren started out as a 16-year-old “service boy” at a local rubber factory. Over the next few decades, he leveraged a knack for numbers, a genius for efficiency, and the know-how to make a great canvas tennis shoe into an all-American success story. What began as a family shoe business has today evolved into a globally recognized brand with billions of dollars of annual revenue.

Van Doren is not just an entrepreneur, he’s an innovator. In 1966, when the first House of Vans store opened, there were no stand-alone retail stores just for sneakers. Paul’s bold experiments in product design, distribution, and marketing (Why not sell custom shoes? Single shoes?), aided by legions of fans—skateboarders, surfers, even Sean Penn wearing Vans’ famous checkerboard slip-on shoe in the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High—made Vans a household name. But there was also back-breaking work, a shocking bankruptcy, family turmoil, and a profound shift in how customers think about athletic shoes.

Authentic details Van Doren’s personal life, but also hard-won business lessons learned over six turbulent decades in the shoe trade: the importance of deep-rooted values, of improvisation, of vision (and revision), and above all, of valuing people over profits.

Brighton Zeuner Weighs In on Jenkem's "Parts" Video.

In case you missed it, Brighton Zeuner is on Jenkem's latest edition of PARTS.  It's where they ask a skater to talk about their favorite, least favorite, etc. parts of skate videos. Brighton shares some of the work that goes into making her skate parts as well - it's hard to be a contest skater (and on the USA National Team) and go from that to filming parts - two very different things.

Watch the video above and then read the rest of Brighton's interview over at Jenkem.

"Betty" Season 2 Now Has a Release Date!

Get on board!  Season 2 of Betty premieres in June on HBOMax.

In Betty, a diverse group of young women navigates their lives through the male-dominated world of skateboarding in New York City. Starring Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, and Rachelle Vinberg, from Crystal Moselle’s original film Skate Kitchen.

 Here’s the official synopsis:

As Kirt (Nina Moran), Janay (Dede Lovelace), Honeybear (Moonbear), Camille (Rachelle Vinberg), and Indigo (Ajani Russell) cross the threshold to womanhood, they unite to protect and empower their skate community, fearlessly mining the nuances of their identities and embracing their differences along the way. We love seeing that female athletes (WNBA's Sue Bird and NWSL's Megan Rapinoe leading the charge) are getting in on the NFT craze and we were especially excited to hear that skateboarding's Mariah Duran will be part of a release of digital trading cards set to drop next month.

Duran is represented by Wasserman Media as are Bird, Rapinoe, as well as the WNBA's Charli Collier,  and Aari McDonald, Paralympic Track & Field athlete Scout Bassett, and Olympic Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad who also have NFT's being released as part of "The Collective Series".

This series of collectable (and one of a kind) digital trading cards are available to the public on May 10th and are designed by Los Angeles artist Lauren Nipper.

NFT's are a great way for women to control the narrative and have true ownership of the image that is out there. Case in point, model and actor,  Emily has said for years that photographer Richard Prince appropriated her image (a series of photos - including nudes - that were taken at the start of her career and then released as she became more well known) for his work. Now she’s doubling back on it for one of her own. How's that for #winning?

It's great to see women taking the lead when it comes to their own brand.

While we don't have any idea what the NFT of Mariah will look like at this point (but we know it will be awesome), so stay tuned on May 10th to get a look and bid on the Mariah Duran NFT via THIS LINK.
