Park at X Games Ventura

Ventura, CA – July 11, 2023 – This summer, fans will be treated to an all-star talent team of Selema Masekela, Jason Ellis and Tony Hawk hosting the X Games on ESPN and ABC, alongside streaming host Jack Mitrani hosting the YouTube, Twitch and Caffeine coverage from July 21-23. In addition, Kristen Beat will provide sideline reporting for the host teams throughout the weekend.

The definitive storyteller of action sports culture, Selema Maskela joins the crew again in Ventura after his recent return as host of X Games Aspen in January. Known as X Games' original and long-standing host; he has also been at the helm of Red Bull Signature Series, VICE World of Sports and served as a correspondent for FIFA World Cup, Olympics and National Geographic.

Also returning to the X Games talent booth is the godfather of skating himself, Tony Hawk. One of the most recognized action sports athletes in the world, in 1999, he became the first skater to ever complete a 900, and shortly thereafter, launched Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, his now billion-dollar video game franchise. The Hawk empire includes Birdhouse Skateboards, Hawk Clothing, and the Tony Hawk Signature Series products, as well as his production company, 900 Films.

Back as part of the X Games team this year for the first time in over 20 years is multi hyphenate athlete-performer Jason Ellis, who himself competed in the first-ever Skateboard Big Air contest at X Games. Currently hosting the Hawk vs. Wolf Podcast alongside Tony Hawk, and The Jason Ellis Show Podcast, which he previously hosted on SIRIUS XM for 15 years. Jason Ellis is also an accomplished MMA fighter, LGBTQ + Advocate, New York Times best-selling author, actor, singer and, most recently, stand-up comedian.

Hosting the streaming coverage will be longtime X Games personality Jack Mitrani, who will be joined by guest hosts including Brandon Graham, Alexa Score, along with many other X Games legends and athletes. Jack is a former pro snowboarder who joined the telecast team as X Games host in 2017. He is also the creator of the Frendly Gathering music festival and a Martin Guitar ambassador.

Reporting from the sidelines will be current World Supercross correspondent Kristen Beat, who brings 10 years of experience as a sports reporter covering everything from Supercross to NASCAR to football and baseball.

Providing play-by-play for all skateboard events, Brandon Graham – World of X Games host since 2013 – returns to the X Games talent team.

Graham is joined by Corbin Harris, who returns year to provide Skateboard Park and Vert analysis. Starting his career as a pro skateboarder, Corbin then transitioned to presenting with Fuel TV and Fox Sports, then X Games and Nitro World Games. Corbin also has added agent to his resume – he’s a partner and sports and entertainment manager at The Familie, representing many action sports athletes.

Amelia Brodka will provide analysis for the women’s skateboard events, and Gary Rogers will provide analysis for the Skateboard Street contests.

Longtime play-by-play presenter Jimmy Coleman will call both BMX and Moto X events. He’ll be joined by former X Games gold medalists Scotty Cranmer (BMX) and Blake “Bilko” Williams (Moto X) providing analysis for their respective sports.

X Games California 2023 tickets are available now at XGames.com. In addition to general admission tickets, X Games offers several hospitality and experiences which include meet and greets, behind the scenes access and more.

Additional information on X Games 2023 will be forthcoming on XGames.com for fans or on XGamesMediaKit.com/ for media only.

The Worble Video Premiere Last Night Was Badass + Guess Who Turned Pro?

Poppy Starr turned Pro for Worble last night ~ Photos Ian Logan x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

Last night’s skate premiere was one for the books! Not even the light rain, that came out of nowhere, could stop people from attending the W0rble Video Premiere launch party at Benny Boy Brewery near Downtown Los Angeles. The beer was flowing, and the brewery’s outdoor spaces were packed with skaters and friends, ready to watch the premiere of W0RBLE WORLD. It did not disappoint! Best skate film we have seen in forever!!

The Worble Crew!

Poppy Starr, Janthavy and Eunice were featured throughout and each of their parts were so damn good - lots of fun moments too. Watch this video on REPEAT!! It is what skateboarding is all about - shredding hard and having FUN!

It was nice to see some of Poppy’s longtime skate friends come out to cheer her on - Lizzie Armanto, Bryce Wettstein, Hayley Wilson, Hannah Tallman, Benny Gonzales, Allysha Le, Nicole Hause, Corbin Harris and so many more!

The Olsen Family - Kip, Poppy, Thomas, Banjo and Andrew

Right after the movie there was another surprise in store… W0rble turned Poppy Starr PRO! Her new board is so sick (artwork by Marbie Miller) and Poppy had no idea that her entire family was in the audience and had flown in from AU to watch the film and see her turn pro - what a great night!!

Tony Hawk's Vert Alert is Now a Direct Qualifying Event For X Games 2023.

PRESS RELEASE

Today, the Utah Sports Commission, Tony Hawk Inc., and X Games announced an incredible weekend of skateboarding featuring “Tony Hawk’s Vert Alert (THVA),” to take place at Vivint Arena in downtown Salt Lake City on Friday June 23rd and Saturday June 24th, 2023. After extremely successful Vert Alert events in 2021 and 2022, Tony Hawk and X Games are excited to announce that Tony Hawk’s Vert Alert will now be a direct qualifying event leading to X Games 2023.

This epic, free-to-the-public event will kick off with preliminary rounds of both the men’s and women’s pro vert contests and the incredibly popular Tony Hawk’s Vert Alert “Legends Demo.” Saturday the 24th culminates with a combined field of 16 of the best male and female vert skaters competing in the THVA Finals. 10 hand-chosen male and female skaters will compete in the popular “Best Trick Contest.”

The exciting twist this year is that the top 3 male and top 3 female skaters will earn coveted invitations to X Games 2023 – details to be announced soon on xgames.com. Plus, the skaters will all be competing for a combined purse of $75,000.

Fans will be watching some of the biggest airs and most progressive tricks in vert skateboarding all on Hawk’s state-of-the-art vert ramp. And don’t forget an appearance on both days by the legend himself, Tony Hawk. Plus, check out the free indoor and outdoor interactive sponsor village.

Last year’s winners include Jimmy Wilkins, Mitchie Brusco, Moto Shibata, Lilly Stoephasius, Bryce Wettstein, and Arisa Trew. Best Trick winners were Edouard Damestoy and Reese Nelson.

Both THVA days are free to the public, with event details and times published at https://thvertalert.com/. Live streaming options for the Legends Demo, the Men’s and Women’s Finals, and the Best Trick Contests will be available at xgames.com. And in the days following Vert Alert, a two-hour highlight show featuring all the best from the weekend will air on ESPN.

“Continuing our terrific partnership with Tony Hawk on this two-day celebration of skateboarding will be great for Utah and also skateboarding globally,” said Jeff Robbins President & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. “Welcoming back some of the top skateboarding athletes and Olympians in the world will once again showcase why, Utah is the State of Sport.”

“I’m excited to bring our world-class vert event back to Salt Lake City in 2023,” said Tony Hawk. “The stakes are higher than ever as this year’s event winners will automatically qualify for X Games 2023. The previous two years were hugely successful and we’re proud to be back with many of the most talented skaters in the world for a free, two-day vert showcase. It will be a triumphant return to Salt Lake City for the third Vert Alert! Come join us!”

“Vivint Arena has hosted many celebrated figures during its 32-year history, and we are thrilled to add Tony Hawk to that long roster of legends,” said Jim Olson, president of the Utah Jazz. “Tony Hawk’s Vert Alert will be an event unlike any other we have hosted, and we look forward to offering this entertaining weekend to our incredible community.”

GN4LW Team Riders Featured in the Hermosa Beach St Patrick's Day Parade!

Evette, Maya, Klara, Mazel, Briel, Brooke and Cindy - All photos by Ian Logan

We were asked by “Boards Across Hermosa” to be part of the 27th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade here in Hermosa Beach and we couldn’t say no! We rounded up some of our team riders and made a plan. A special green Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word hat was made, clover balloons were brought in along with various shades of green beads to add some green to our skate wear.

The weather started off with a heavy mist, but as we got closer to parade time the weather shaped up and the street dried up enough to skate the parade route, give out stickers and wave to the crowds.

Team riders, Maya, Klara, Mazel, Evette, Briel and Brooke joined Cindy in skating the entire parade route!

Thanks to the Hermosa Chamber of Commerce, City of Hermosa Beach and Boards Across America for this fun opportunity!

GN4LW Featured in New Smithsonian Book!

We’re excited to kick off Women’s History Month with this exciting news!

The very first demo of the Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word x Dusters cruiser board is featured as a two-page spread in the Smithsonian Museum’s new book, Entertainment Nation. We are thrilled to be in a book that is about all things entertainment, not just skateboarding. Why? It helps us reach a new and larger audience so we can continue doing what we do to help push and promote non-traditional skateboarding.

This black version of this board is also on display in the current exhibit “GIRLHOOD: It’s Complicated”, which has left the museum in Washington D.C. and is traveling across the USA for the next few years. You can find out more about seeing the exhibit HERE

You Need to be at Bigfoot Magazine's DIY Series of Events!

Bigfoot Magazine’s Try DIY Event Series - Team Rider Katelyn West featured ~ Photo Ian Logan

This is so BRILLIANT! Bigfoot Magazine is doing exactly what we wish we’d see non-traditional skaters do more of - get out of the man-made (perfect) skateparks and skate DIY! Back in the day, we skated ditches, full pipes, abandoned pools and more - this is where you really learn to “figure it out”. Which makes you a better skater overall.

Migz - the brainchild behind Bigfoot Magazine has started a series of events with skate session meet-ups at super cool DIY spots. One of our favorites spots that just re-opened is San Pedro’s Channel Street - which just happens to be the second one on the “Try DIY” list.

This about sums it up - what a GREAT day!!

We have to thank all the support this event was given this year, not only by our amazing sponsors but also Girls Play LA,  LA Parks and Rec, and the City of Los Angeles.

We say this every year, but it is so true... The best part of this event is seeing so many girls come out and skate, meet one another, and form friendships, and they now have a group of girls to continue skating with throughout the year. That's what keeps these girls progressing.

Huge thanks to the City of Los Angeles, LA Recreation and Parks, Venice Recreation Center, Venice Art Walls, DJ VRSA, Skate Park Association International, Heidi Lemmon, Lance Lemond, Kimi Kallman, Bart Saric our fabulous announcer, Lonnie Hiramoto, all the judges and volunteers, the photographers - Lauren Muller, Gale Webb, and Chris Hooten, who covered the event, as well as the numerous sponsors who sent so much product that the girls went home with a big bags of swag.

Hope to see everyone again next year!

Thanks to Chris Hooten for the use of all his images!

The GN4LW Team At Exposure Skate!

Maya Kenny ~ Photo Ian Logan

Our Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word AM team riders had such a great time at Exposure Skate! All six girls (Maya, Klara, Katelyn, Elle, Mazel, and Mayzie) skated in the bowl contest - four in the advanced division and 2 in Intermediate. Elle is a past Exposure competitor, but for the other girls, this was their first time competing at this fantastic contest that skaters from all over the world come to, and they handled it well!

Pro team rider Minna Stess (fresh off her 3rd place podium finish in Rio) opted to compete in the “longest Grind” event at Exposure, and it was so much fun to watch these skaters push it for so many coping blocks!

Save The Date - The Venice Ladies and LGBTQ Jam is Almost Here!

This is one of our favorite events of the year! Not only because Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word is a co-host of the event, but because this is the day that non-traditional skaters take over Venice Skatepark for a fun day of skating and competing. From the youngest skaters in the “Pup Cup” to 25+ skaters, this event has something for everyone! We hand out medals and so many prizes from our awesome sponsors - it really is the best! In past years, we have seen over 100 non-traditional skaters show up and compete - skaters from all over the world to skate the legendary Venice Skatepark with us!

Save the Date, and we can’t wait to see you there!!

Non-Traditional Skateboarders Had a Night Like No Other...

Bryce Wettstein hitting the rail at teh Bigfoot Magazine party - Photo Ian Logan

When you put out the word that Bigfoot Magazine, a non-traditional skateboard magazine is having a party to raise funds for issue three, and it’s announced that USA Olympic Women’s Park skateboarder Bryce Wettstein will be skating and singing, you get an incredible crowd of diverse people showing up!

Quinne checking out Issue 2 of Bigfoot Magazine - Photo Ian Logan

Instead of just the typical skateboard peeps, there were musicians, artists, some of the Moxi Rollerskating crew, neighbors wanting to support, and quite a few mini shredders from the skateboard scene. Parents let their kids roam free, skating the sidewalk (complete with a rail) out front of Bigfoot Magazine’s offices, and Bryce showed them a few tricks, which was the start of a really fun evening.

Justice, Klara, Mayzie, Bryce & Quinne - Photo Ian Logan

Later, Bryce and pro skateboarder Amy Caron took to the stage to sing and play, and the songs ranged from some of Bryce’s original material to old favorites like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” People danced, sang along at times, and just took it all in. Their voices were beautiful, and the acoustics inside were perfect.

Last but not least, the evening ended with a raffle, and all sorts of great prizes were given out. The kids went home tired and stoked, their parents enjoyed themselves, and the rest of us had a fantastic Saturday night meeting new people and knowing that Bigfoot Magazine Issue 3 - will be going to press soon.

Keeping media and brands that are run by and focused on non-traditional skateboarding is so important - thanks to everyone that came out to support!!
