Who's Rad? Angela Strong.

We are always impressed when girls take initiative. So when 11 yr old Angela contacted us through instagram and showed us pics of herself shredding her backyard ramp, we were interested to hear more. Turns out she has skated some of the coolest places around, like Woodward West, & the Girl/Chocolate warehouse ramp just to name a few. She has also had a chance to skate with the Pink Helmet Posse girls on her own backyard ramp. Get ready to get inspired by a young girl who is asking for what she wants and going after it. That's pretty cool!

Down The Rabbit Hole With Absolutely Alice.

XS "Freeride" Helmet customized by Absolutely Alice for GN4LW

We were introduced to Absolutely Alice awhile back by our mutual friend Suzanne, and I couldn't believe what rad art they were creating with just a simple Sharpie. So when the opportunity came along to have them do a custom helmet for GN4LW, I knew the "canvas" had to be one of our new favorite Freeride XS Helmets. I think you will agree, the final look is nothing short of amazing!

We also thought you might want to know a bit more about these amazing & talented women behind Absolutely Alice so get ready to be blown away!

Can you reveal who's behind Absolutely Alice?

Minh Nguyen(The Mad Hatter) & Lauren Liberatore (Alice)

Photo: Eric Hendrix

Please tell us a little about yourselves...

(Minh):  My childhood was not ideal, and my relationship with my mother was far from hugs and kisses, I was rebellious in her eyes and not a child she wanted in her home, so at the age of 15 I was sent to live in a small town in Connecticut with my older sister. It would be in this small town that Lauren and I would meet. I only lived in CT for 6 months before I moved back to CA but somehow 17 years later we are still by each others side. We have seen each other through boyfriends and breakups, marriage, divorce, children, deaths, tears of happiness and joy... We can argue and fight, but no matter how harsh the words, or angry we get at one another, we know that we will always have one another's back, no questions asked!

How did the idea & the name for Absolutely Alice come about?

The name comes from the original book "Through The Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll. The story of Alice is one that relates to the both of us. The author wanted to tell the story of a young girl who chose to believe that life was more then what her family, teachers, and society was telling her that it should be, so she followed the rabbit and stumbled down the rabbit hole. It was in wonderland that she met some amazing people and creatures and discovered a world unlike no other she had ever known. Some can argue that it was a dream, but to Alice it was reality... We both followed the path that Alice did, until we discovered that our rabbit hole was held inside a sharpie marker. To many this little pen is a simple writing tool, used a few times and once it runs out of ink, tossed in the trash with not a second thought. But Lauren and I, believe that this pen is something magical, that this pen can open up a world of possibilities, that this pen can turn something as plain as a helmet, skate deck, etc... into the most amazing pieces of art, that is not just beautiful but tells a story, reveals a life, and open up doors to a world never before seen.

Are you girls skaters, surfers, snowboarders?

(Minh): Lauren loves to snowboard and is really good at it, she hasn't been able to snowboard yet here in Cali but next year she will for sure! Itook up the sport of skateboarding at 32 back in September, and fell in love with the sport. I commend the women who can skate those pools because it is not easy! The bruises are no joke but the day that I dropped into a pool for the first time is an amazing feeling!

You draw amazing & intricate pieces only using Sharpies - what led you to using this medium?

Because art can be held in anything, even something so insignificant as a pen. We want to show the world that what many look at as an everyday sharpie marker can do extraordinary things. We believe that a life is what you create, held within your mind, and brought to life with what is in your heart.

What are peoples reactions when you tell them you are an artist and create with Sharpies?

They think we are crazy. Sharpie art? What is that? But when we tell them the story and why we chose sharpies, they understand!!

You do some amazing art work on skateboard helmets like the one you are doing for Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word - how did that idea start?

When we are approached to do a project it takes research and time. With every piece we dive into who that individual or company is trying to say to the world. When you look at one of our helmets, decks, or piece of work, you will be able to get to know the person that it was created for, even if you have never met them.

Customized helmet done for the non-profit,  Poseiden Foundation by Absolutely Alice

Beyond skateboard helmets can you tell us what other interesting work Absolutely Alice has done?

One of the coolest pieces we ever did was last year at the Sheckler Foundation Skate For A Cause Event... We built a "sharpie wall" with four pieces of plywood, laid out in various ways with sharpie pens hanging all over the wall. Everyone who came to the event would come up to our booth and scribe a little note or sign their name onto the wall, from pro skaters to patrons, we even had Jason Ellis and his kids scribbled a little note. We gave one of the pieces to the Shecklers and the other three are currently hanging in Minh's house.

What is the most difficult item you have ever sharpied on?   Nothing is to difficult when you love what you do!

Do you have a favorite type of sharpie you like to use - thin, thick, etc?    They are all good!!

What about fav colors of Sharpies?  Black

Any downside to drawing with Sharpies?     Shading is rough some times.

I'm hoping Sharpie has approached you and offered you some sort of sponsorship deal?

We would love to create a line of AA inspired sharpie markers with names like, "teacup blue" "mad hatter green" etc...

Where can people see your amazing work?    On our facebook page, instagram, or when some of our skaters wear their helmets!

Pro skater Julz Lynn with her customized helmet by Absolutely Alice

Any new ideas/products you are launching that you's like to talk about and share??

We would love a chance to work with a skate company to create a skate deck geared towards girls. One idea we had was a deck with various types of girls on it, the school girl, the rebel, the nerd, etc... but all of them holding a board, showing that skating can bring girls together from all walks of life!

If someone wants to commission a custom piece directly from you is that possible?   Absolutely!

Where can people follow you & see your newest work on social media?

On our FACEBOOK page and via our Absolutely Alice INSTAGRAM feed!

Many thanks to XS Helmets & Absolutely Alice for collaborating with us here at GN4LW on this amazing project!   xx

We love how this turned out and can't wait to share a full interview with the girls behind Absolutely Alice  tomorrow - right here on GN4LW!

I first saw pics & videos  of Brighton on Instagram and I knew she was someone we needed to do a Who's Rad on. Within weeks I heard she was joining the OG Betty skate team (that team is blowing up!) as it's newest team rider. This past Saturday I had the pleasure of meeting Brighton and watching her walk down the runway at the Pink Widow Gypsy Agenda fashion show. Check out her video at the end of this interview - I'd say she is definitely going places fast!  Yeah Brighton!

Who's Rad?   Brighton Zeuner

Age:    9

Home is?    Encinitas, California

How Long Have You Been Skating?   For almost two years but I've been around skateboarding everyday from the age of 4 when my dad got back into skateboarding and helped my brother Jack get started. Jack was the one who got us going to skateparks all the time. I would take their old decks and play with them on the carpet, pushing the tail and turning around, and then I got a skateboard for Christmas and started rolling around in the garage.

After my 8th birthday, with the help of my brother, I decided that skateboarding is definitely my thing and started to "go for it!"

Girls Who Skate that inspire YOU?   Mimi Knoop, Cara Beth Burnside, Holly Lyons, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins - Pastrana, Julz Lynn, Nora Vasconcellos, Lizzy Armanto, Amelia Brodka, Allysha Bergado, Alana Smith, Peggy Oki (she's a Z GIRL!) and of course my all-time favorite and the one who is like my Godmother, Patti McGee!

Favorite place you've ever skated?   Well it's hard to name just one favorite so I have to say my home park, Encinita's YMCA, Vans Combi bowl, the new Oceanside park and Birdhouse (Tony Hawk's vert ramp) and Rockstar's vert ramp (at Elliot Sloan's)

Favorite Trick?    Half cab no-hand blunt

Sponsors:   Original Betty Skateboards

Three Things You Don't Know About Me:

1. I have three grandmothers who survived breast cancer, they are RAD GIRLS!
2. I have a Sphynx cat named Cluseau who is 16 yrs old.
3. I still play with dolls (okay I'll probably be embarrassed that I said that, but oh well)

What's Next?

Within the past 6 months, I've skated in two World Cup Skateboarding events, Exposure (Women's 14 and under Vert & Women's 14 and under Bowl) and Vans Girls Combi Classic in Anaheim, CA. The Combi is short for combination, which basically means that it's gnarly!

My first big contest was King of the Groms 2013, where I won 4th place in mini ramp. There were only three girls who made it to the National Championships and the rest were the top boys from all over the country.

I shot my first video edit in two days in Arizona, where I'm from originally, and it's on YouTube now! I'm getting ready to start filming my second video in SoCal. I have a few contests coming up in California, then in June, I'm going to Minneapolis, MN to be in the King of the Groms Championships, then back to California for the California State Games and the World Cup Skateboarding contests.

I just moved to Encinitas, California in San Diego and I have friends to skate with every day, even the girls from my school. I'm going to keep working on my schooling and also learning how to surf. I got my mom to try skateboarding and I like to help the girls I meet at the skateparks who are just starting and give them Patti McGee stickers for their helmets. The skatepark is a great place to make friends!!!

Who's Rad? Bryce Wettstein Part 2.

Bryce Ava Wettstein has been on everyone's radar as a rad skater girl for quite a few years now (watch her skate videos and you will see why), but there was something else we wanted to interview Bryce about. She's all of 10 years old and has a signature board with Silly Girl Skateboards - and she designed all the graphics herself.

Read on to see how a 10 year old girl is charging in the pool and out, and inspiring other girls to do the same. We are in awe. You should be too.

Who's Rad?  Silly Girl Skateboards team rider & artist,  Bryce Ava Wettstein

So Bryce do you like to do art - draw, design or?

Yes, I love to do art - all kinds!

Can you share with us how the idea for your own board come about?

Matt Gaudio, my team manager and owner of Silly Girl Skateboards offered to let me design my own graphic, as a way to 'thank you' to my family and I, for riding for Silly Girl for so long and for always contributing back to the team and brand.  Also, because there are a lot of younger girls out there who are into skating or are starting to try skating, he wanted Silly Girl to offer a graphic that would appeal to the younger girls - like my age and younger, and I am 10 years old.  At the time I was 9 years old, and most of the graphics Silly Girl carried were designed to appeal to older girls and women.  Matt felt that who else better to design a graphic for the younger girls, than me - the youngest member of the Silly team.  That was about 2 years ago.  Now Minna Stess is our youngest rider!

How did you come up with the ideas for your awesome art work?

I surf as much as I skate, and many times when I skate I imagine I'm surfing and sometimes when I surf and want to hit the lip of the wave, I imagine I'm skating.  So I knew I wanted the graphic to have a wave on it and a sun.  I began doodling and added a heart along with a wave and the sun.  Since I'm always happy I wanted bright colors too and so I also gave the sun a smiley face.  My mom and dad were checking out my doodles and said the drawing I had so far looked like the saying, 'Peace, Love & Happiness", so I added the peace-sign.  And that was that!  Simple and bright!

What type of medium did you use for your original artwork - poster paint, sharpies, crayons, pen/ink?

Matt Gaudio told my dad it was best to draw it to scale and we had an extra deck for a template.  I'm not sure of the exact process of how it goes from paper to board, so I just used sharpie markers on blank white paper.  It was nothing fancy.  I know my dad then scanned my finished artwork into the computer after he helped me clean it up and then he emailed it to Matt.  We thought it would be silk-screened on to the boards but it is not anymore.  Eric 'Vision' Muss-Barnes from Skateboarding California made a video with Silly Girl, explaining how the graphic then gets onto the skateboard deck.  Knowing what I know now, I would have taken more time with the sharpies to color more uniformly, but I am still way stoked on how it came out!

Here is a short video video on how skateboard graphics are made

It seems like you have been shredding forever and we have loved watching you progress - how long have you been a Silly Girl Team Rider?

I have been riding for Silly Girl since 2009 - almost 5 years - and since Julie Westfall stepped down to 'flow' so she could pursue other interests, I am now the longest riding member of the Silly Girl posse!

Where can people buy your rad board?

You can order my graphic, called 'The Silly Life!' directly from www.sillygirlskateboards.com and from Pink Widow Distribution.

What are the dimensions?

'The Silly Life!' graphic is available in 7.5", 7.75", 8.0" widths with a 14" wheel base.  For now it is just available in pop-sickle shape.

What type of female skaters do you think will enjoy riding it?

Girls who skate pool, park, or street will all enjoy riding my board!  My favorite type of riding are pools and bowls :)

What do you think girls will like best about your graphic?

What I think girls will like about this graphic is that you can tell it is hand drawn and not too fancy.  The colors are bright and the message is positive.  With the white background and plenty of it, there is a lot of extra room for all your favorite stickers without obscuring the art.  Also, I set mine up with blue rails to protect the graphic and make board-slides more fun!  Lastly, it just so happens that GN4LW heart-sticker fits perfectly on top of the heart in my graphic, so if you can find a GN4LW sticker, you're stoked!

Thanks for the GN4LW love Bryce - we think you did a GREAT job designing this board with Silly Girl Skateboards. We are stoked that you are out there everyday charging ahead and inspiring other girls to do the same!  xx

Thanks for having me back on GN4LW!!
