Aori Nishimura Wins Gold At X-Games Women's Street Comp!
Aori Nishimura

Great to start off the event hearing Lyn-z Adams Pastrana commentating and seeing the girls who are competing in park tomorrow coming out to support their skate sisters!

A lot of the girls had falls on their first run which hurt their scores.  Alexis Sablone came close to a perfect run except for the small fall at the end. Meagan Guy used the entire course extremely well and stuck every trick during her first run and earned a great score in the process. Aori Nishimura was smooth and solid and had zero falls on her first run launching her into 1st place. Julia Brueckler packed in quite a few tricks and the judges rewarded her accordingly.

Second runs also had quite a few falls but some positions on the leader board changed. In the end, Leticia moved up to 3rd place and Aori held onto the lead to grab gold.  Pamela Rosa had an unreal run but it wasn't enough to get her on the podium this time.

Great contest and congrats to all the girls!

UK's NASS Womens Park Results.
Photo via NASS

NASS is the UK's biggest event of the summer - like a cross between our Vans Warped Tour and X-Games.

You may remember that in 2015  USA's Lizzie Armanto did a demo with Tony Hawk and the Birdhouse team at NASS

It's a packed weekend of raw action sports, music and party-hard living. Land at NASS and you'll find yourself smack bang in a world where ravers and athletes go BIG... No matter if you’re moshing at main stage, raving in The Warehouse or watching our world class skateboarders and BMX riders killing it in the Pro Park, there’s not a minute of the day that isn't going off at NASS.

There were some interesting podium results on Saturday for the NASS Women's Park Finals. Andrea Benitez from Spain took first, 9 yr old Sky Brown from Japan took second, and UK's favorite skater girl, Lucy Adams, took third.

Congrats to all the girls that competed - the course/venue looked amazing!

4 Helena Long

Our New #FreedomToFind GN4LW Lookbook Is Here!

Check out the Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word apparel and skateboards like you've never seen them before. We are so stoked to share our new 2017 Summer Lookbook with you. All you have to do is click to open the lookbook and tap on the pop-up links in the photos, to take you directly to buy anything your heart desires....

There is nothing better during the summer than having the #FreedomToFind, so that's exactly what we decided to do when we shot this lookbook.

We piled Amanda, Zara, and Kala into a friends jeep and took a little road trip to some iconic LA spots, starting with a rad backyard ramp (complete with a tree house!), after a few hours we got hungry, so we decided to grab some (ok, a box) donuts at this iconic LA spot, and then hit the beach for a late day skate sesh before the sun went down. A perfect LA adventure.

Make sure you tag us in your skate adventures this summer by using #FreedomToFind and we may just feature you on our site!

lookbook release!

1. The Vermont Drop - Los Angeles, California

.  Also known at

The Funnel

. This skate spot has been around since the 70's and has been featured in countless magazines. The transition is not smooth and the ride is rough.  You'll need to hop a fence to get in, and you should bring a broom because there is always debris, but it's a hell of a lot of fun and takes you back to the 70's for sure. As with any good, renegade, skate spot, we're not going to blast the location out here, because you gotta respect old school skate spots and find them yourself - so do a little research and have an adventure.

#FreedomToFind

2. Wndrloop

-  Christinia, Copenhagen, Denmark.

This spot is totally DIY and has a huge cult following among European skaters.  Picture a Hot Wheels track loop, but for skateboarding - yep - a

death

loop.  Make sure you have some speed and don't try it if you're stoned, drunk, or unsure of your abilities.  If you're lucky, you may be the first female skater to complete the loop and have total bragging rights.

#FreedomToFind

3. Garvanza Skatepark

- 6240 Meridian Street, Los Angeles

- this park is just badass and makes for some great photos. The pool is gnarly and the graffiti changes often, best to get there early in the day before the summer heat and the crowds. Have some respect for the locals and they will respect you back. It's gnarlier than it looks.

#FreedomToFind

4. Otro Skatepark - Brussels, Belgium.

The worlds first glow in the dark skatepark created  artist Koo Jeong. It solves all those pesky issues like shadows at night and not having lights at your local park. How does it work? It's built with green phosphorescent concrete and glows once it's dark outside. How many people can say they've skated a glow in the dark skatepark? Not many.

#FreedomToFind

5. Burnside Skatepark -

SE 2nd Ave,

Portland, Oregon.

Skaters talk about Burnside for a few reasons  - it was built 26 years ago, bit by bit, by local skaters in a extremely rough neighborhood, under a bridge. The locals used to be pretty territorial so skating there was iffy at times if you didn't know someone.  But now it's 2017 and gentrification has taken over - there are lofts directly behind the park, Eco friendly vehicles park in lots nearby and they serve a burger called The Burnside at the restaurant near the park. Not so sketchy of a neighborhood anymore.

Our advice is;  take a road trip and skate it while you can, because when gentrification takes over it sometimes means that we as skaters, lose our DIY spots to developers. Hoping this doesn't happen here...

#FreedomToFind

Photo via SkatePunk.com

6. Mt. Baldy Pipe - San Bernardino, California

- still one of the gnarliest and hardest spots to reach,  Baldy a throwback from the 70's where skaters like Kevin "The Worm" Anderson helped made it famous. Baldy is the stuff dreams are made of. But not for the feint of heart - you'll have to trek in and it's not easy - the paths have washed away over the last few years so be prepared to scale almost impossible terrain. Once you get there, there used to be a rickety, narrow board you had to carefully walk across to get to the actual pipe. We've heard it's gone missing, so you may need to bring your own. If you get in and skate it, take pics, post and hashtag

#FreedomToFind

because we've got a special surprise we will send your way.

*Bring a current newspaper with date showing in photo with pipe in background for proof that it's a recent pic.

7.  Kaos Temple - llanera, Spain.

What could be more inspiring than skateboarding in a 100 year old church? Not much. Street artist Okuda San Miguel is credited for turning the walls and domed ceilings of the abandoned and crumbling church into a bright, isometric, paintings. Besides being beautiful to look at, this skate spot has some rad half-pipes to skate, and if you take a slam, just lay back and look at the art work above. While you are there, make sure to thank the crew from La Iglesia Skate for transforming this space into an amazing skate spot.

#FreedomToFind

8. Venice Skatepark, Venice, California.

If you're a skateboarder this is the spot everyone you meet in the world will ask you if you've skated. Summer is great here, a soft ocean breeze, sunny warm California days and the ocean just steps away. This park has something for everyone - snake run, bowls, pool, street. The locals are cool and if you give respect, you get respect. Skate from sunrise to sunset for free. Pads are supposed to be worn but rarely enforced. The trick here is if you are given the $50 ticket for not wearing your gear  - you can only get ticketed once per day, so just suck up the cost and keep on skating. (You didn't hear that from us).

Skater Natlaie Krishna Das - Las Chicaz Crew  / Photo Tim Vasquez

9. The Nude Bowl - located in the desert outside of Los Angeles, California.

Another iconic skate spot where we're not going to give away the exact location - you gotta work for this one. You'll thank us later. Promise.  It's a insane pool in the middle of nowhere.  The Las Chicaz all female skate crew just did a rad trip out there and posted some insane photos - total respect to these badass chicaz! Word of warning, the desert gets extremely hot in the summer so bring lots of water and sunscreen. Best time is an early morning or early evening sesh before the sun goes down.

#FreedomToFind

Photo via Kona Skatepark

10. Kona Skatepark -

8739 Kona Ave,

Jacksonville, Florida.

Saving one of the best spots for last. Kona just turned 40 years old this past weekend, making it the oldest skatepark in the world. Other famous parks (Marina, Cherry Hill, Apple) are buried under mounds of dirt since they were demolished or covered over in the early 80's.  Only Kona lives on. Thanks to the Ramos family who has been running Kona since 1979, as well as die hard local skaters who are loyal and whose kids and grandkids now skate at Kona, this awesome skatepark has kept the dream alive! Make sure you hit their massive, and well known snake run - it's a rush!

Summer Lookbook is dropping SOON!

Who's Rad? Photographer Tiffany Williams.
Poppy Starr Olsen

Photos throughout by Tiffany Williams

There are all sorts of ways to have a career in skateboarding, beyond being a pro skater. In fact, a lot of pro skaters have dual careers that usually involve artistic endeavors. Photography is one of those paths.

Today's WHO'S RAD is an interview with Australian based photographer, Tiffany Williams. We met Tiffany after skateboarder Sari Simpson referred us to her, we liked her photographic style, in and out of skateboarding, and we were lucky enough to work with her and feature her photos from two major Australian skateboard comps this past year. But Tiffany's passion and style in photography goes even beyond what she does at the skatepark - she shoots fashion/lifestyle editorials, band gigs and more. Read on to see just what fuels her creativity.

Who's Rad?         Tiffany Jade Williams

Where do you live/work?

Sydney, Australia – I work at a photo editing company in Sydenham called Raw Digital Lab + freelancing on the side.

How did you get started in photography?

My mum brought home a camera for work and I was completely fascinated. I ended up begging her for my own and haven’t put it down since!

What type of photography do you do when you are not shooting skateboarding?

I originally did a lot of events, particularly music, lots of festivals. Though I’ve stepped away and am trying to switch my focus towards fashion editorials.

What made you decide to start shooting female skaters?

I love skateboarding; it has always been a sport that has captivated my attention. However I am not a great skater myself so I turned to passions into one. I suppose I drifted toward photographing girls over guys mainly because I was stunned and always wished I had their skill & confidence.

Sari Simpson

Are there any skaters you really enjoy working with & why?

Definitely Sari Simpson, she’s the person who allowed me to explore skate photography. She’s one of my favourite skaters to watch, so much speed & determination.

Brighton Zeuner

What are some of your favorite places (skateparks, street, backyard pools) to shoot at?

I only really shoot the Bondi Bowl but I had the opportunity to photograph the Vans Park Series in Manly and that was definitely one to remember.

Do you have an all time favorite female skate image that you’ve shot?

This image of Shanae Collins has got to be my favourite, the colours make it for me.

Shanae Collins

Any favorite tricks you like to shoot?

Love when girls pull inverts, really gets the crowd pumping.

Favorite camera body & lens?

Canon 6d & 40mm – I shoot most of my work with this set up, the ‘pancake’ lens tends to be more subtle so you can get some real nice candid’s.

Do you like to light or do you prefer shooting with natural light?

I’m not a studio shooter that’s for sure. I love utilizing natural light and work with that mostly. With skating I love adding in the flash because it makes the skater pop in the image.

Any girls out there you haven’t shot yet but would like to?

Plenty! Obviously a shoot with Lizzie Armanto would be iconic but I’ve started following UK skater Savannah Keenan who I’d also love to work with, she’s got a sweet fashion sense and style on board.

Poppy Starr Olsen

Any advice for someone who wanted to get into action sports photography?

Practice, practice, practice. But more importantly, step back, watch what’s going on, follow the skater, see what spots they like to hit & then snap away. Observation has helped me so much.

Where can we see your work?

http://www.tiffanyjwilliams.com/ - my favourite stuff can be seen on my site, but my most recent published work can be found through Sticks & Stones Agency and Off the Rails magazine.

Make sure you follow Tiffany at:

Lizzie Armanto Up For 2 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Sports Awards - Vote Now.

Pro skateboarder Lizzie Armanto is up for not just one, but TWO Nickelodeon Kids Choice Sports Awards this year!

Lizzie is up for the category "Queen of Swag" which is all about voting for the best dressed, stylin' athletes in the game - she has some tough competition with snowboarder Torah Bright, race car driver Danica Patrick, Tennis stars Serena Williams & Caroline Wozniacki, as well as fashionable WNBA star Skylar Diggins-Smith

Lizzie's next category is "Don't Try This At Home"  - this time the category includes both male & female athletes in action sports.  Lizzie has pulled off some pretty amazing tricks this past year and is definitely a solid contender, but with big wave surfer Keala Kennelly riding some monster surf this year, it's anyone's guess as to how this one could go down.
