Three Things You Don't Know About Me:

1.When my brother is mean to me I accidentally drop his toothbrush in the toilet

2. I can speak at the speed of a thousand gazelles if I think you're  not interested in what I’m trying to say

3. I’m clumsy normally, I have a better chance of hurting myself walking in a straight line, than I do skating big Vert Ramp

Photo Pete Jess Photograophy

What’s Next?

QBowl Championship is on this weekend, and I’m keen to get my handplants on the coping before I leave hopefully. I’m looking forward to skating the Olympic training camp in Canberra soon. I’m hope be in the 2024 Olympics when I’m bigger. But that seems so far away.

Any advice for other girls out there learning to skateboard?

Pad up.

Don’t be afraid of the boys, because if you are afraid of them you will never accomplish anything. A lot of my friends turned out to be boys, because I’m usually the only girl at the skatepark.

Keep skating and having fun, and you’ll land your first big trick in no time. If you have a crash and hurt yourself, this is probably a really good time to ask your parents for an Ice cream.

Hopefully you keep skating and I look forward to skating with you one day when I come to America.

Pro Downhill Skater, Candy Dungan Joins #Skatetofight.
Candy Dungan is ranked #5 in the world for Downhill Women's Skateboarding

We are very proud to say that Pro downhill longboarder, Candice Dungan is taking a very public stand against sexual assault.

Last year, #skatetofight Team Rider, Candy Dungan, shared her own sexual assault story in Concrete Wave Magazine, this year, #skatetofight is joining Candy and boyfriend Aaron Hampshire in Denver to produce a skate video that takes a stand against sexual assault.

In the video, Candy and Aaron will be discussing the importance of bystanders; the people who
are not the perpetrator or victim. They'll talk about how a bystander can support those in their life
who may be victims of sexual assault, and they'll suggest things everyone can do on a daily basis
to help stop sexual assault from happening in the first place. Candy will use her own story, and
how Aaron helped her heal, as an example.

“We started this campaign for the same reason we've done all of our projects: to help provide
hope and healing for victims, and to advise bystanders on how to help,” said Jaden Beau Durrant,
#skatetofight organizer. “Those who’ve suffered deserve to have a voice, to know where to get
professional help, and to have the emotional support and security from the growing community
that #skatetofight provides.”

Candy Dungan is ranked #5 in the World for Downhill Skateboarding Women’s Category. Aaron
Hampshire is ranked #3 in the World for Downhill Skateboarding Open’s Category. With their
help, #skatetofight is hoping to reach a large audience in a male-dominated industry.

“It’s obvious the skate industry needs this,” said Candy Dungan. “I post something about sexual
assault and no one interacts. I post that my bearded dragon did something funny and get hundreds
of likes.” She believes that funding for this video will have to come from outside the skate
community in order to impact a community that needs to hear this message.

#skatetofight has created a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for production. The goal is to raise
$2,500 by Oct. 27th. This is an all-or-nothing campaign; if #skatetofight does not reach their goal,
then they will not receive any of the pledged funds. Please stand with us in the fight against
sexual assault by sharing this campaign with your audience and asking them to contribute and
share.

#skatetofight is an organization founded in early 2015 with the goal to use skateboarding to help
those who struggle with mental illness, and to create a more positive and friendly community for
all skateboarders. Over the years, #skatetofight has branched out to help those who struggle with
addictions, sexual assault, and the challenges of daily life. Although #skatetofight is our name, we
recognize that the core of why skateboarding helps us is because of the passion behind it.
Passions are one of greatest healing and strengthening powers.

The girls with filmer Eliza Cox

Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word is extremely proud to present the documentary film,

The Daughters of Doom

, by 28 year old filmmaker Eliza Cox, who wrote, directed and edited it.  Unless you caught the film playing in Australia at film festivals, this is your first chance to see this awesome short documentary about three young skaters girls in Australia.

We caught up with Eliza fresh off of the Heart of Gold Film Festival, where the documentary was shown last week to large crowds, to ask her some questions about

"The Daughters of Doom".

Can you tell us how you originally became interested in skateboarding?

My friends and I built our own skateboards when we were about 17. But we never stuck to it. I broke my leg and my back soon after we built them, and they’ve never fully recovered - which means skating isn’t an option (though I sometimes have a sneaky push around!). There also wasn’t much support for girl skaters, so through this film I wanted to explore the current skating environment.

What made you decide to create this awesome film that portrays girls in a strong way?

I’ve always been so impressed by girls dominated traditionally ‘male’ sports - whether its football, surfing, or skating. Last year I saw a girl at the skate park at the end of my street. She was the only girl, surrounded by guys and absolutely shredding. But I was most impressed by the fact that she looked about my age. I began thinking about why I hadn’t stuck with skating and wanted to know more about today’s girls scene.

How did you come up with the great name for your documentary?

It’s a contest mentioned by one of the girls in the film. When I heard it I couldn’t resist the title! I emailed the ladies at the contest and they okay’d the name for me to use - so amazing of them, and I’m so grateful!

Who are the skaters featured in your film?

Hayley Wilson, Ava Godfrey and Charlotte Heath. All of them are killing it, and filming was tons of fun.

Has the film been in any film festivals as of yet?

It’s been selected for two Queensland festivals - Heart of Gold International Film Festival, and Noosa International Film Festival. It was my graduating film and I received the 2016 graduate award for female direction. It was also nominated for best cinematography.

What's next after this - as the film has been so well received?

I’m currently shooting a feature skate doc - which I can’t talk too much about just yet!

King (or Queen) Of The Harbor Championships Results.
Photos ian Logan x Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word

Today was the first annual King of the Harbor Championships in Redondo Beach. The contest was put on by the Redondo Beach Police Department and had divisions for 8-12 yrs old and 13-18 yrs old.  The comp took place steps from the water under bright sunny skies and a nice ocean breeze.  About 45 kids (mainly boys) turned out to free skate and compete.  Each competitor was given a free S1 helmet from Kinetca, food from Chronic Tacos, gift bags, and a few also received skateboards as prizes.

Hosted by the Redondo Beach Police Department, the free event aimed to promote safety and build positive relationships between law enforcement and skateboarders.

The South Bay crew of girls, Kala Fernandez, Quinne Daniels, Briel Weingartner & Vianez Morales showed up and it didn't faze them at all that there wasn't a girls division, they just got to work and skated hard. The judges and contest organizers were blown away by the girls, and in the end decided to award them prizes and also crown Vianez Morales with 1st place for the girls "division".

Congrats to Briel, Kala, Quinne and Vianez for showing the crowd how hard girls shred!

Skate Contest In Redondo Beach, CA This Saturday!

Listen up South Bay skaters!  The inaugural King of the Harbor Skateboarding Championships kicks off at 11 AM  on Saturday 10/14 at an octagon-shaped cement area near the Fun Factory on the Redondo Pier area.

Hosted by the Redondo Beach Police Department, the free event aims to promote safety and build positive relationships between law enforcement and youths participating in a sport that’s inherently outside the lines.

Participants ages 8 to 18 must wear a helmet and complete a liability waiver.

The event is for skateboarders of all experience levels and will include free skate time before the contest gets underway.

Skateboarders will get two one-minute shots to impress on a course of rails, ramps and other pieces of equipment. A panel of judges — including pro skater and stuntman Jason Acuña, better known as “Wee Man” — will score contestants in three age groups.

Winners will be named in each age division and one overall winner will be declared King of the Harbor Champion.

Calleigh Little Is Skateboarding Across The USA Today & We're Totally On Board.

We are proud to announce that Calleigh Little is our very first Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word Micro Grant recipient and we couldn't be more stoked! This young woman has been a fixture in the longboard and downhill scene for quite awhile, so when she approached us for a little help with her upcoming cross country skate, we jumped at the opportunity to support this awesome dream she has of skateboarding from Bend, Oregon to Boston, MA.

Calleigh's route

This will be a solo skate - in fact her cross country journey is entirely unsupported - there is no car following her, no shelter provided, and her own determination will pushing her to complete it.

You can follow Calleigh's progress ----> HERE on her "Ride with GPS" app she's looking at having to complete about 3,324.1 miles on her skateboard.

Calleigh knows just how strong she is and what she can achieve, "Just because I’m a transgender girl, I’ve never let anyone tell me I couldn’t accomplish what I wanted to. Gender has been important to me on my own individual level, but in the bigger picture, it’s never stood in the way of my dreams. I entered my first Ultraskate in 2016 and stood proudly on the women’s podium in second place with 172 miles skated in 24 consecutive hours."

This weekend (as a little warm-up) Calleigh participated in The Bend Beatdown event which took place in Oregon, and she took 1st place in the women's 5K, 10K and 25K races!  A full sweep!!

Calleigh took 1st place in 3 events in Oregon this weekend / photo David Prather

Starting today,  Calleigh is heading out to try and set some serious records:

*First Transgender Person to Cross the USA by Gravity Powered Travel
*First Woman to Skateboard Across the Country Solo
*Fastest Known Time Skateboarding Across the USA

A film crew funded by CNN, is covering her skate all the way from Oregon to MA for "Great Big Story" so we will keep you updated on when her story will air.

Her sponsors for her cross country skate include:

Newton Trucks
Orangatang Wheels
Orginal Skateboards
Riptide

Tom Petty Was Supporting & Featuring Female Skateboarders Back In 1989.

After hearing the sad news about music icon Tom Petty yesterday, it only seems right to post his popular 1989 "Free Fallin'" video. Why? Because Tom was way ahead of his time and was all about featuring girls in skateboarding long before it was popular in mainstream media to do so.

This video features a female skateboarder dropping into a half-pipe (at about 3:00 into video). Her name was Devon Kidd (Devon Jenkin now) she was from Manhattan Beach, California and she spent 2 days filming the video in the San Fernando Valley area with Tom Petty, pro skateboarder Mark "Gator" Rogowski and his girlfriend Brandi McClain.  After the video, Devon went on to become a professional downhill skateboarder.

RIP Tom and thank you for showing a female skater dropping in and actually skating - way back in 1989!

Brighton Zeuner Joins The Pro-Tec Team - Video.

Pro skateboarder, Brighton Zeuner,  may only be 13 years old but she is racking up podium results and high-powered sponsors like nobody's business. After signing with Red Bull during the X-Games, Brighton has now added Pro-Tec to her growing list of sponsors.

Check out the "Welcome to The Team" video that Pro-Tec just did for her. Congrats Brighton!!
