Another Rad Book On Women's Skateboarding Is Here!

We are stoked to say that we have published yet another book that showcases women in skateboarding!  This time it's CONCRETE GIRLS  by UK based photographer Charlotte Thomas who has been chronicling the girls skate scene in the UK for the past five years.

We will have an interview with Charlotte soon, but in the meantime, check out her recent interview on SIDEWALK MAGAZINE to learn more about this amazing book, the launch party info, and how you can get your hands on a copy!

DID YOU MISS THE COMP?    Watch it NOW!

It was really cool to have ESPN showing the women's street finals LIVE from Norway on YouTube this morning. The feed was great - no glitching and the coverage was awesome!  It was an exciting comp, Leticia Bufoni took a solid lead early on and never let go, Pamela Rosa fought hard but had to settle for bronze this time around, and Lacey Baker looked like she might just take that gold away from Leticia on her last run, but was unable to break Leticia's score, and walked away with a nice silver medal.

Leticia hasn't won gold at the X-Games in the past 5 years so this victory was especially sweet for her!  And as two-time gold medalist, Leticia Bufoni becomes the most-medaled Women’s Street Skateboarder with her gold medal win at X Games Norway 2018.

A unique line-up of professional skateboarders, community leaders and renowned scholars from a wide variety of disciplines will be joining forces for the first time to examine the unconventional role of skateboarding in fields as diverse as urban planning policy, humanitarian aid, and gender identity.

PUSHING BOARDERS is a collaboration between London based non-profit groups SkatePal, Re-verb Skateboarding, and Long Live Southbank – the organisation behind the successful campaign which saved the ‘Undercroft’ skate spot on London’s South Bank from redevelopment.

The event, which is a celebration of the social and cultural impact of skateboarding, will take place at the House of Vans London and The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL from June 1st-3rd.

Some of the biggest names in skateboarding and academia will travel to London to be part of the panel discussions over the course of the weekend, including: Elissa Steamer, the first woman to become a professional skateboarder; MIT-trained architect and pro-skater Alexis Sablone; UK pro-skater Lucy Adams; Skateboarding Coordinator for the City of Malmö Gustav Svanborg Eden; Founder of Skateistan Oliver Percovich; pro-skater and children’s book author Karl Watson; and art historian and satirical skateboarding critic Ted Barrow.

Lucy Adams, Professional Skateboarder , said: “Pushing Boarders is a fantastic opportunity to show
the social and cultural impact of skateboarding around the world and raise the profile of skateboarding in the UK as we see international experts in their fields come to London for this first-of-its kind meeting.”

The weekend kicks off on Friday 1st June with the opening party at House of Vans featuring DJs and a skate film premiere. Talks take place over the Saturday and Sunday, with a free skate school, a street

What Happens When Vans Builds a Park For An Event And Leaves It Behind?

Prepare to be inspired by what happens to a community when Vans builds a skatepark in Malmö Sweden and leaves it behind....

The Kroksbäck Skatepark was originally built in Malmö, Sweden for the Vans Park Series World Championship final in 2016. Once the event was over the skatepark was left behind for the city to enjoy and what has developed since is more than anyone expected. In particular, a group of local kids have picked up skateboarding for the first time and have made the skatepark their second home. This is a story about that community and the power of skateboarding.

House Of Vans x The Kills Events.

Vans will host the lastest skate clinic, Girls Skate Jam, on May 18 at House of Vans in Brooklyn and May 19 at House of Vans in Chicago. The events will celebrate the culture of skateboarding as Vans aims to inspire and encourage women of all ages to get on a board and skate. To further showcase the power of skateboarding, The Kills will travel to each event for a special performance.

Skateboarding is an amazing way to get girls and women to be more confident, push their limits, and discover what they are capable of. Girls Skate Jam invites women to show off their skills or learn something new at each House of Vans location from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.

The event will feature members of New York City-based skateboard collective The Skate Kitchen including Nina Moran, who has previously hosted the TedTalk "Girls Belong in The (Skate) Kitchen."

In addition to the Girls Skate Jam, House of Vans will host an outdoor street market with female vendors and an ongoing art installation by Robin Eisenberg - one of the first females to ever collaborate with Thrasher Magazine. From 8:00pm to 10:00pm, doors to the House of Vans will re-open for a live performance by The Kills.

Inspired by the young women of Vans' lasted campaign, "Girls Skate India", clinics and skate jams have been scheduled around the world in effort to encourage and enable women through skateboarding. "Girls Skate India" is an emotional narrative set in India that shows female skateboarders inspiring the next generation through skateboarding and D.I.Y. spot building, activities that are often considered unorthodox for girls in many areas across the globe.

Featuring Vans athletes Lizzie Armanto and Atita Verghese, "Girls Skate India" shows how Indian girls gain confidence through skateboarding and highlights how a nontraditional activity provides an outlet for them to express themselves.

Vans has mobilized around the world to teach women and girls how to skateboard through a series of global skate clinics -inviting women to learn something new alongside their peers and together inspire a new wave of women's skateboarding progression. From experts to beginners, Vans welcomes everyone to these clinics and encourages the emerging women's skate community to come together and celebrate creativity.

A Really Fun Judi Oyama x Eloise Dorr Collab Is Launching!
Art collab with  Eloise Dorr
Judi in the late 70's FS Grind - Photo Michael Goldman

1970's pro skateboarder, Judi Oyama, is a badass. She was a trailblazer back when very few girls skated vert and she also raced slalom - many times against the guys. She is an orginal Santa Cruz / NHS team rider. Her skate history sits not only in the NHS museum but also in the Smithsonian.  She competed in both the Gold Cup Series and the Hester Series back in the day and still races and skates parks today. Her line of apparel under her Badass Skatemom name is a hit not only with skateboarders, but with the CrossFit community as well.  In addition to all of this, Judi is the wife of cyclocross racer Greg Foy, mom to Taylor and Ryan, and "dog mom" to a very rad rescue dog named Cooper.

So when Judi gave us the inside scoop about this collab she was doing with artist Eloise Dorr, we knew it was going to be something very special. We love Eloise's' art and have been following her progression for awhile now. Vans has had her as part of their Get On Board event this past month, and her work has been the focus of qiute a few solo shows all over the world. It's the type of art that makes you smile and just feel GOOD.

We had a chance to catch up with Judi during the (very) busy week of her Skateboard Hall of Fame induction, to find out how this collab came into existence, and what products will be rolling out.

Skateborading Hall of Fame takes place Friday, May 4, 2018 in the city of Anaheim

We know you are super busy getting ready for your Skateboard Hall of Fame induction Friday night (yeah!!), but we have a few questions we want to ask you about this awesome new collab that's launching!

How did you discover Eloise and her artwork?

I have never met Eloise in person. I saw her work on Instagram and loved her illustration style. I like supporting female skate artists so bought a few of her art pieces from her website. She has a really fresh style. Her silhouette characters make me smile.

What about her illustrations makes her art one of your favorites?

For one, I love the subject matter (skateboarders) the humor she adds to her illustrations is awesome. The details she adds and scenes she puts her characters in are super fun.

How did the collab between you two come about?

I hired Eloise to paint a slalom skate image my dad took because I wanted to see that image in her style for a personal wall art area I am creating in my house. This led to another piece and then another. Being an owner of a design company and years of being a Creative Director I have discovered many artists and watched their careers grow. I feel Eloise is just at the beginning of an amazing career. After communicating via email Eloise started doing a few other designs.  We worked out a small business relationship together to build some fun items to put on my Badass Skatemom site

Judi Oyama slalom run circa 1970's / Photo Richard Oyama

These fun stickers are a part of the Judi Oyama x Eloise collab and are available now

When will the collab items be released?

The Stickers and Magnets are available now on my Badass SkateMom site.

The collab mugs and t-shirts are coming soon - so keep checking back!

We also have a limited run of 100 skate decks that are in early stages of development. They will be made in the USA with my Slalom Skate board sponsor Sk8kings.  Something we’ve been talking about doing for years with them, and since SHOF has happened, I decided to finally make a deck. Thanks also for your encouragement to do something like this, that I never thought possible years into the sport.

What do you hope people feel/think when you see this collab?

My hope is that people will enjoy and graphic and it will make them happy. Being a long time skater it is awesome to finally make a limited edition board with an amazing artist Eloise Dorr.

Congratulations to Judi on her Skateboarding Hall of Fame induction, and on this fun collab with artist Eloise Dorr. We can't wait for the full launch so we can get our hands on all the products!

More info on Judi & Eloise

Santa Cruz native- Judi Oyama is a successful graphic artist, entrepreneur, CrossFit buff and the owner/creator of the clothing line Badass Skatemom. She was also a crew member of the first wave of female skaters during the 1970s who were tearing up the parks, empty pools, downhill and slalom racing.    http://www.badassskatemom.com

Eloise Dörr is a 22 year old artist from Oxford, now living and working in London. The main feature in her work are small silhouette characters who spend all of their time skateboarding, falling over and generally plodding along with their simple lives. She paints these characters and their environments from her studio in South London, and if she's not there she'll probably be out skating with her friends (if the English weather permits!)     http://www.eloisedorr.com

All info and images via VPS and The Boardr

Australia's Poppy Starr Olsen defended her title this past weekend at Five Dock Skatepark in Sydney, Australia, and won the VPS Continental Championships Oceania for the second year in a row, which means she will be able to go straight to China to the VPS World Championships.

This year's comp had some exciting moments and newcomers to the scene. Sabre Norris and her 540 were spectacular to watch, Charlotte Heath is still a youngster, but definetly someone to be reckoned with as she moves up the ranks. To see a full field of 10 girls competing was awesome as well!

You should definitely take a few moments and watch the highlight reel above - these girls really skated hard!

Another Female Skater Graces The Cover Of Coping Block Magazine!

 Photo Chris Hooten

Coping Block Magazine has now had four covers featuring female skateboarders. The most recent cover features Florida's Grace Marhoefer competing at the Vans Girls Combi and was shot by California photographer, Chris Hooten.

Make sure you pick up a copy of Coping Block, because it also has a whole spread on the Girls Combi contest and more pics of other female skaters inside.

The 3rd Annual Venice Ladies Jam Photos.

 Photos by Lauren Muller

The 3rd Annual Ladies Jam kicked off under sunny skies and by 10:00 AM the skatepark was filled with girls of all ages skating everything in site. The youngest competitor was just 3 years old and the oldest in her mid 40's.  During the 25 yrs and up part of the comp, we heard Quinne Daniels and Vianez Morales cheering for their respective moms, who competed in the snake run - how cool to see moms and daughters compete at the same event!

We kept hearing girls say to one another "hey!  I know you from Instagram!" - the meets up were fast and furious and friends were made IRL. Two popular skater girls on Instagram, Nymias & Aliqqak were in town from Indonesia and stopped by to compete and took pictures with their new American friends.

All the girls cheered one another on during the comps and every girl that participated got a medal and a sponsor goodie bag - some girls were so excited about the swag, that they competed in more than one division throughout the day.

The best part of this event is seeing so many girls come out and skate, meet one another, form friendships and they now have a group of girls to continue skating with throughout the year.

Huge thanks to the City of Los Angeles, Venice Rec & Parks, Skate Park Association International, Heidi Lemmon, Lance Lemond, Kimi Kallman, Jim Gray, all the judges and volunteers, the photographers who covered the event, as well as the numerous sponsors who sent so much product that every single girl went home with a big bag of swag.

Hope to see everyone again next year!
